Name a series of books that started out great but that you feel then went down hill?
The Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series is a big favorite of mine but damn, it went from absolutely excellent to downright horrible. I haven't brought myself to spending money on new books in forever.
Do you yourself a favour, read them, but after number 9 don't bother.
And I gave up on the Wheel of Time after book 6.

A series of unfortunate events was brilliant, until the final book, which was so bad, I couldn't finish it.

I disagree about WoT, and I utter a pre emptive disagreement to anyone who mentions the Dark Tower.

I am not a big reader, but the first two Mick Foley autobiographies were great. The third one was all right, but nowhere near the standards that the first two set.

I disagree about WoT, and I utter a pre emptive disagreement to anyone who mentions the Dark Tower. Nah the Dark tower books didn't go downhill till the last damn chapter so I won't count them. Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series got really repetitive and dull after about 6 books though so I'll say that series.

I for one loved it and cried like a b****, others hated it with as much passion. Kudos on your sig btw.

I for one loved it and cried like a b****, others hated it with as much passion. Kudos on your sig btw. I knew by just reading this title that my beloved DT would come up...Biafra im right there with you man...I simply LOVED the ending (I cried hard as well...Recently just finished The Talisman and started crying on the last page of that one too) and thought it was exactly how it should end...Roland made strides to show his compassion but he never really could put the quest aside for his brethern...Also I dont understand why people are so pissed...Sai King himself gave us all a warning that if you want a happy ending then to stop there with Roland at the door but the selfish reader continues racing through the book to get to the finish... The only things that bothered me with the ending are the fact that the situation with Patrick (of Insomnia fame) and Mordred is never really explained and up until reading the Talisman I thought it was a cop out that Su would find an alternate Eddie and Jake together...then I read the Talisman and the concept of a "twinner" fully puts that into perspective for me...

Dragonlance.
So many sequels/prequels/side stories... The only really good ones are those by Weiss and Hickman.
Not really a saga per se, but Stephen King's books have gone terribly downhill in the last decade or so

Harry Potter after book four, she built a great world populated by some iteresting characters, and it was all building up to a big war but hardly anything happened to the last book.
Then the final installment was largely focused on Dumledore who I wasn't a fan of, had pointless random deaths, gave no payoff to several story arcs and most importantly introduced several new concepts that didn't really work.
Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy went downhill too imo.

Not really a saga per se, but Stephen King's books have gone terribly downhill in the last decade or so Duma Key and Cell say Hi But so does Lisey's Story.. I'll give you taht one.. the Only King book I NEVER managed to finish... The Original Bond Books by Ian Fleming really went down in quality by the end.. mainly due to the fact Fleming was dieing whilst writing Man With THe Golden Gun Harry Potter Went really downhill after Goblet Of FIre

I agree with most of the posts here(including Dark Tower kicking all kinds of ass), so I'll add the Bourne series.
The first trilogy....well...the first book was awesome. Second book was your standard sequel, but as it followed an awesome first book, it too was pretty good, but book 3....oh god. Did that one SUCK! Whilst I read it, I could just feel that it was thrown together so the series could be called a trilogy.

Got to agree with Hitchhikers Guide, the first two were amazing, after that they kind of went downhill.
I disagree with Harry Potter though, whilst I hated the fifth one and didnt particularly like the 6th one, I really liked the last one, especially the quest-likr feel to it.

I disagree about WoT, and I utter a pre emptive disagreement to anyone who mentions the Dark Tower. I agree whole-heartedly with your disagreement about WoT. I love that series, and think it's a damned shame Jordan didn't live long enough to complete the series himself. As for a series I've read that went downhill... Animorphs. I loved that series as a kid, but the last few books sucked hard.

Harry Potter would be one that I wouuld say went down to up. Why? Because pretty much the entire plot of the first book was stolen from another book series blatantly.
