Ok, here's the deal, I need either a new pc or laptop, and I know nothing.
I need help finding one, but I don't know what I need in terms of specifications.
However I can give you a list of the things I'll be using it for.
- Internet (Firefox, MSN messenger) - Itunes (the latest one) - Office software - Powertab software
And I'll need it to be able to connect to the interwebs via wireless, as I live in a big house with only 1 phone socket
So roughly what kind of thing am I looking for? And is it even possible with a budget of £400?

I'm not sure of the Euro market, price, but...
I'd definitely go at least dual core.
Laptop vs. Desktop is a personal choice you really gotta make yourself. You'll be free to change locations and wireless is pretty much a gimme for being included. On the flipside, the desktop is usually better in price, generally faster even at similar specs and generally lasts longer.

I love my Dell Inspiron laptop. Use it for everything, and it should be well within your budget (can't say for certain - mine cost about $700 U.S.
Also, Ellen Feiss does not approve of this thread. ;D

I'll have a look at Dells, but usually the best way to figure out the price of something from $ to £ is thus. 1. Figure out the price using the current exchange rate (So $700 = roughly £500) 2. Double it for no reason. 3. Add a bit more for taxes 4. Add a little more, just to stick it to us

Honestly, a laptop would be better for you, since you don't game - and what you want it seems like mobility is important.
An ultralight laptop will cost a lot more than a "normal" weight laptop, so... not sure I'd bother with that.
Core 2 Duo, NOT an AMD. Intel simply demolishes the AMD chips now.
2GB Ram should be fine, if you go with 4GB, get Vista 64 bit, not 32 bit (so you can actually use all 4gb).
Look at the Inspiron 1525, it's a 15.4" screen, there's a version for about $800 USD, with 3gb of Ram already included, and Vista 32 bit, integrated graphics, etc. I don't see any reason you need to spend extra cash on graphics for what you're doing.
However... you can also look at someone more "global" - yeah, Dell is global, but as you said, they kind of stick it to you a little bit. Look into IBM, they are excellent from everything I've heard in terms of global service, and warranty work, etc. Dell's warranty is excellent in the US, no clue how it flies in Europe.

For brands, check out Medion. I hear they're big in Europe and the few over here I've heard of are all great.
Oddly, they sell them from time to time at Aldi's, a discount grocery.

Yours also has 2 GB of Ram, not 3gb. Also, 160gb hard drive, not 320gb. www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspnnb_1525?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs - click the one in the middle, or farther to the right. If you give me an email, I'll make a cart and email it to you.

Edit: configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=NRS15254&l=en&m_30=136643&oc=N0152505&rbc=N0152505&s=dhsI put the 4 year warranty with the "oops" coverage (aka, you drop it out of a 4th floor window and it shatters and they give you a new one... or spill coffee on it, or whatever). Without that warranty, you cut the cost down to like... 450 Euros or pounds or whatever it uses on that site :X

I'm a PC and I like to fart in a jar and preserve it for later.
