In games where clothes give you "added special abilities", do you still make your character look like he can dress himself or do you make him look completely retarded but with the best abilities??

Heck, I'd make my character wear nothing at all if it gave them the best boost available.

I usually try to power them up as much as I can, while keeping a good look. And it's rare that characters end up looking silly from using the stronger equipment, even if the different of said equipment don't come from the same costume.
Also, in Fable, I gave my character a "normal" armor when just walking around or attempting stealth action (sneaking inside houses, stealing, etc...) that mainly focuses on looks, and a "battle" armor when fighting enemies that might give some competition, which obviously focuses more on protection. This way, I can swap them whenever I want.

I try to find equipment that matches, but if I can't, I just max out.
I've worn bluejeans, a metal headband, and shoulderpads in a game before. I looked like a doof.

In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I have never given my characters any of the head/face equipment to wear, since pretty much anything you can wear on your head or face in that game looks completely ridiculous and/or makes you look like Lobot.
