Why do people think The Dark Knight will actually have a shot at winning this year? Hell, I would love it if it did, but it just boggles my mind how so many people think it has a shot. We are talking about the Oscars here, you know.

My five picks:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Slumdog Millionaire The Wrestler Milk Gran Torino
Wall-E will win best animated picture, though, so I believe it won't go away empty-handed.

Frost/Nixon should win. It'd be a joke if Dark Knight is even nominated. But how much of the "But the star died!!!" factor is going to play into that?

My predictions:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Frost/Nixon *Slumdog Millionaire *Milk Wrestler/Doubt
*=Seen I really hope slumdog will win, but given the political nature of the year, I have a strange feeling Milk will get a lot of votes from the academy.
and if Wall-E gets nominated, I riot.

But how much of the "But the star died!!!" factor is going to play into that? Only reason there's any buzz about it at all. Disagreed, there was a huge buzz before the tragedy occurred. Albeit it did contribute towards half of the total buzz when the film eventually came out.

I saw the words "Stacked" and "Picture" in this thread title and expected something totally different. I have been disappointed.

It was a great year for film.
I hope Wendy & Lucy get a nod. If not, Michelle Williams def. does.
Frozen River was also very underrated and needs to be on this list.
I could see Blindness getting a nod as well.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas too.
And I haven't seen Good yet - but I've been hearing a lot of good stuff about it.

I didn't think Milk was a good movie at all. It's honestly one of the biggest Oscar-bait movies I've seen in a while. I don't think The Dark Knight will pick up a Best Picture nod, but I know it'll probably win all the technical categories, and Ledger will more than likely win Best Supporting. Although it's not to far out of left field, as you have to remember that PULP FICTION was nominated for Best Picture and it not at all the type of movie that the Academy usually goes for.
The five I can see being nominated for Best Picture: The Wrestler: It's been almost universely loved by critics and is the type of film that tends to sneak in very quietly. I don't think it will win, but I think the Academy will reward it with at the least a Best Picture nomination. I think Rourke will get a Best Actor nomination as well.
Doubt: It's an Oscar-baiting movie, but it's actually GOOD. I was riveted when I watched it, and I wouldn't be shocked if it won. Streep and Hoffman should both also be nominated for awards based off of it
Frost/Nixon: This is the one that I see winning in all honesty. Then again, I thought 'There Will Be Blood' was a lock last year, and we all saw what happened.
Burn After Reading: The Academy loves the Coen's for some reason, and after winning last year with what I thought was a mediocre film, they honestly should be nominated again with a much better one.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: It has everything in it that the Academy looks for, and it's one hell of a movie. It's not going to win, but I see it at least getting nominated and wouldn't be shocked if Pitt won Best Actor for it.

Frost/Nixon -Nothing but positive feedback from this, and it looks like a film that gets nominated.
Slumdog Millionaire -Danny Boyle's films are amazing and this does deserve a nod.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button -Personally, I thought this film was just OK but it might get a nod.
Milk -VERY good film (coming from a straight guy).
The Dark Knight -Fanboyism aside, this has a chance of getting a nod. Box Office can lead to a nomination. Just look at Return of the King or Titanic. Will it win? Probably not although we can all agree that Heath Ledger's Supporting actor nom is the more important award relating to TDK.
Others: The Wrestler -Highly doubt this will be nominated. But I do hope Rourke gets something.
WALL-E -This will not get nominated. It was a good film, but not Pixar's best IMO. And besides when was the last time an animated film was nominated for Best Picture? I only remember Beauty and the Beast. WALL-E though will get the best animated oscar guaranteed.

About the "The Dark Knight:" Since the early 90's, it seems as if there's always one spot open for the oddball "fan favorite." Starting in 1990:
1990: Ghost 1991: Beauty and the Beast 1992: Scent of a Woman 1993: The Fugative 1994: Forrest Gump 1995: Babe 1996: Jerry McGuire 1997: The Full Monty 1998: Life Is Beautiful 1999: The Sixth Sense 2000: Gladiator 2001: Lord of the Rings 2002: The Two Towers 2003: Lost in Translation 2004: Sideways 2005: Brokeback Mountain 2006: Little Miss Sunshine 2007: Juno
Since there really hasn't been any "indie comedies" that have set the world on fire, I wouldn't be surprised if either "The Dark Knight" or "Wall-E" filled that spot.

I don't see why Dark Knight can't get a nomination.
If overrated garbage like Juno can get a nomination, also Odd movies have made it into the Best Picture before (Indiana Jones, Star Wars & LOTR)

And LOTR: Return of the King won in 2005. So there's precedent for a possible Dark Knight nod.
