Do you think if the Nature Boy circa 1983 was just starting his career today in lets say ROH or another major independent, and was just signed to WWE what do you think they would use him for? do you think he would get over?

Fliar, the space age mask wearing buzz lightyear and Rey mysterio hibrid?
Lol, joking!
It's hard to say, if he did everything the same then maybe not. But, it is really hard to say, as a lot of things in wrestling today come from flair or that generation he's from, so asking if he'd make it today is a tough question.
As a wrestler and performer, no doubt, but in getting over and becoming the legend he is, it's so hard to imagine.

I don't think so. Flair fit in the old school champion mode but in this day and age I don't think he had the physique or charisma to get over that huge.

I agree I figure at most he would achieve a haku like status were inside the walls of the business he is a legend but to the outside world he is just a sorta over midcarder

Flair was never a bodybuilder type even in his prime. WWE wouldn't give him a second look other than as a jobber or something.

He would, but only if he shaved his head, wore an earing, dressed like a gladiator, and called himself Spartacus.

Haha, Flair oozed charisma. And his charisma would've worked today, no doubt, as it did until he retired and he was an old man then

Flair was the most charismatic guy in wrestling next to Piper (personal bias). He would get massively over on his promo ability alone. His matches in his prime would have assured him a good spot too, because he could make a broomstick look good with his bumping. He would have been an ideal guy for WWE to put their hosses with.

I don't think he'd ever become a 16 time world champion, that's for sure. His decent but not great physique, and only moderate height, would have probably seen him reach Eddie Guerrero levels- great worker, great charisma, but not the same level.
I have a question about him though- Why is Flair's name ALWAYS spelt wrong in thread titles? Rice Flair, Ric Flar, and now Ric Fliar.

When I saw the Flair didn't have charisma post I thought this thread was about DAVID Flair. But seriously, if Flair was starting today he'd have a modern day vocab to go along with his tons of charisma, and it'd be AWESOME. I could only imagine the wonderfully filthy promos he'd cut. And his physique would be just fine for an ROH or PWG. Bryan Danielson ain't exactly got the body of a WWE Roid Freak himself....

No, and you wanna know why--scripting. Flair got to show his skills in a non-scripted age.
I know you'll say, "But wait, he had good interviews in the last few years" and I would say yes, but that is because he had a good reputation built over 20 years. If he was new he wouldn't have promos tailored to his style and or the freedom to adlib.
And that's even saying he would get a sufficient amount of promo time at all.

Flair's popularity today is based on his reputation and accomplishments. Mainstream wrestling today is very cosmetic and hollywood and as much as I think Flair circa '83 would get over very well in something like ROH or PWG or NOAH or something like that were he debuting in this day and age, because he's not a 6'6" bodybuilder or some triple shooting star press x division type, your run of the mill wrestling fan wouldn't really get it; as much as it pains me to say, Flair's my all time favorite.

Flair doesn't hold a candle to Hogan's charisma. What the buggery has Hogan got to do with any of this?

Flair doesn't hold a candle to Hogan's charisma. Respectfully disagree, as will many others. It's all subjective.

Fliar? what is that?
Seriously,(sort of-is anything about wrestling really serious?) Flair's charisma was/is incredible. He didn't have the physique to compete in the steroid era, but he certainly would now.
Between his ring skills and his tremendous talking ability, I can't beleive any promoter would overlook him in any era.
