10. GenshikenGuilty Gear cosplay FTW! Sasahara Kanji is a college freshman who decides to join a student society to share his hidden thoughts on manga, anime and gaming. When he first visited Genshiken, short for "Gendai Shikaku Bunka Kenkyuu Kai" (Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture), his groundless pride was destroyed by the plotting of Madarame, a sophomore student in Genshiken, but he still couldn't admit that he is an otaku. However, as he participates in society activities such as visiting dojin (private publishing) shops and anime festivals, and hangs out with other society members Kosaka (a hardcore otaku despite his extreme eccentricities and good looks), Kosaka's girlfriend Kasuga Saki (who isn't really an otaku), Ohno (a cosplayer) and the others, he opens his mind and resolves that he will make his way into the otaku world. With their help, Sasahara slowly adjusts to otaku life in Genshiken. ::::::::::::::: ::::::::::::::: (Will Watch, Won't Watch, and Watched/Watching)1. The Skull Man -- 9, 14, 1 2. Well, "Otaku" seems to mean "anime fanboy" and I think "Manjula" is some kind of spaceship.

What Anime fans will tell you, A Otaku is a big fan of Anime, But in the real world, A Otaku, is a obsessive person, who can only think of a certain intrest, and will only think of it. Life is just a distraction, for an Otaku. Overseas Anime fans, think it's a privilege, to be called a Otaku, but in Japan, being called a Otaku, is like being called Scum.

Life is just a distraction, for an Otaku. That is what Japanese people think of him, though the meaning is a little more innocent, like "fanboy" would be, here. Just with geek connotations.

They are little like the marks and smarks in wrestling, only fanatical and weirder.

What the three people above me said would be the best definition. Depends on how you look at it, really.

Yeah, pretty much. I don't call myself an otaku, as I don't really fit that. I like everything. So the term "Japanophile" fits me better.
Also, as for Genshiken, I LOVE it. It pretty much is how my anime club in college is like.

Yeah, pretty much. I don't call myself an otaku, as I don't really fit that. The same goes for me. My attitude toward anime is not as hardcore as some fans, and I'm pretty casual about it. Still, I know quite a lot of stuff regarding anime and manga and the stuff related to it, and I can't deny that I watch a lot of anime. I might be an otaku, but methinks probably not.

Well to be an otaku, you have to be obsessive about something. I don't obsess over just one thing. I'm obsessive over anime, manga, video games, cosplay, I'm basically all the otaku members of Genshiken rolled into one. Oh, and another reason I love Genshiken is it gave us the ultimate comeback to use on those that don't "get" hentai.

Reminds me of when I called a friend of mine an otaku and she got mad as all hell. She was so used to the actual Japanese definition as opposed to the "anime fan(girl in this case)" definition.
You really have to be into anime to get into this show. If you're trying to get a friend into anime or something like that, this would definately not be the show to suggest. Not because it sucks or anything, its just...ya gotta know several things about the whole culture to get half the stuff going on.

Well, since you did mention the Genshiken hentai explanation, let's post it again today!

The references in the show are pretty light compared to the stuff in Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, which has a lot of references, with some of them not even related to anime or manga.

Is this a remake of Otaku No Video? Nope. Similar premise, but while Otaku no Video got.....strange as the series went on, Genshiken is a slice of life series that shows the lives of a group of college otaku. The furthest they go to creating their own anime is making some doujinshi for Comifes(the series version of Comiket).

Also, some more useless trivia. The anime/manga series all the main characters love in the series, Kujibiki Unbalance, was actually made into its own anime series.
