It was really weird being under local anaesthetic, this woman was sticking bloody great big metal poles under my big toe nail and really jamming them home and I didn't feel a thing. then she wrenched a big bit of nail out with these massive plyers. I'm alright now except I have to wear sandals and its winter!!!!

Ah, ingrown toenail removal. Not so bad.
I've found an alternative.
Soak your foot in warm water for about 15-45 minutes. Then, take a pair of pliers (needle nose would be the best bet) or that weird blade thing in nail clippers, and dig it out slowly. Push a small piece of cotton under the nail (where you removed), and if it continues to grow as fast as ingrown toenails usually do, then it will grow over the cotton and outside of the skin.
It's saved me quite a few trips to the foot doctor.

Ingrown toenail huh? I had that done on my big toe last April. I remember the entire upper half of my foot was wrapped in gauze and bandages because it wouldn't stop bleeding after the procedure. Oh yeah, and because it couldn't be exposed to water, and they didn't give me anything to wear over it, I went for about 4 days without a shower until I could finally take off the bandages. Ugh, that was nasty.

It was only a mild pain but it was stopping me sleeping one night so I ripped a bit off of it, then it got infected and it was all downhill from there

Yeah, ingrown toenails are no fun.
Did they put a chemical in there to deaden the nerves? If not, there's a good chance you're gonna have to do this again in about a year. And if so...that sucks.
Got mine deadened after the THIRD surgery. Haven't had a problem with them since.

Back in 2000, I had a very nasty ingrown toenail on my big toe. It bled, and pussed every time I wore shoes. Instead of being smart and gone to a doctor, I operated on it myself using tweezers and nail clippers. I pulled that son of a bitch out of my toe myself, and it felt damn food. I didn't even feel pain, but it bled like no tomorrow. It healed up in no time.

Ah yes...painful memories of my adolescence.
Each one of my big toes ended up getting it quite a few times. The toenail completely removed, yet somehow grew back.
What really sucked was that I would constantly be accidentally kicking something or dropping something on the infected toe and that hurt like a BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITCH!

I was actually in high school gym at the time I had them. It was not a good era of my life. That was pain.

Chalk me up to the ingrown toenail club. Had both toes operated on repeatedly. But like KStrick said, if you can get it out yourself and put cotton in there, you're pretty good to go.

I had my whole toenail removed because an idiot dropped a funton on it & it didn't grow back properly. They told me I would be fine the next day for work.
The next day, I had a severe limp, horrible pain, blood soaking through the bandage & sock, & even my boss felt sorry for me.
Yep, they lied to me.

In fact, most of my problems in life would be solved if the lightbulb appeared over my head on a far more frequent basis.

The anaesthetic is the most excruciating pain I've ever felt. 10 injections directly into the nerve endings? Ouch.
They dropped some liquid on mine so that my nails don't grow back. On my big toes, only my left toenail connects to the skin on one of the sides.

Injections into the toe are the worst pain I have ever felt. I am fine with pain and injections, but I pretty much fainted while lying down due to the pain

I was waiting for months. Then, 4 days before the operation, I said 'f*** it' and cut it out. Surprisingly, it didn't hurt that much. o.O

They've pretty much done the worst thing they can to me with a needle.

I used to get an ingrown toenail on the same toe every year. We went to the same foot doctor, had the same procedure for about 4 years. Then we went to a different doctor once and I haven't had problems since.
