I just had the most amazingly ignorant thing happen to me...I go into file and the woman fails to even ask if im married which legally I still am until my paperwork is done processing and she gets to the point at the end of the filing of the taxes and i tell her im married. She said not to worry about it shes just gonna file me single since i dont live with my future ex anymore. She then gets to where she tells me the amount of my return plus how much they charge to file...well they wanted almost 300.00 to file so I told her id just take my W2s and file on my own or contact a private party because itd be cheaper...she then proceeds to tell me that I have to pay for her services rendered there before she can relinquish my w2s...she tells me it will be 80.00 and i tell her thats ridiculous because i didnt accomplish anything and she said fine she'll do it for 60.00 and im thinking what the hell she just changed it then finally shes like okay ill do it for 25.00 and we will take you out of the system and you can file elsewhere...so i told her id need to run to the bank and get cash...i leave...call the place back and get the district managers number...call him...explain my story and he calls back telling me to go back in and get my w2s...so I go back in to get my w2s and the branch manager is having this woman cleaning out her desk into boxes as im handed my w2s...
is this not freakin ridiculous that a 60 year old woman just tried to extort me for money?
also wouldnt the IRS have came down on me for filing as single instead of filing as Married but filing seperately since my legal wife would be filing that way too?
I am just in a state of sheer aww at how ignorant she thought I was because of how young I am

I'm thinking it's not the first time she has been in hot water for that sort of thing if she was just fired so quickly.

Yeah, I work at a different tax preparing company, and our cancellation fee is only 25 dollars. So, she might've been trying something.
Also, I don't know if it's the same at H&R Block, but not only would you be in trouble, but she would be since she's purposely creating fraud on a return. We get fined like 100 dollars for each purposely-wrong return.

I will never go back to H&R Block. My soon to be ex-wife and I went there two years in a row, and both times, dealt with some ignorant folks, just like you dealt with. We even filed a complaint with one two years ago, and the center manager offered to re-do our taxes for free. Unfortunately, we took him up on this, and we wound up paying the state of Ohio an extra $100.
But legally, I don't think they're allowed to hold on to your W2's. I would've just grabbed them off her desk and walked out. They certainly aren't allowed to charge you to get your own W2's back.

You should've kicked her in the vagina. I laughed pretty unreasonably hard at this.

I worked at Jackson Hewitt last year and if you decided to pick up your W-2's and leave without filing you were not charged. Our fee was $107 for all 3 (Federal, State and Local) and I don't remember ever charging 300 dollars for anyone, and I have had some long returns.

You can file single is you are married. It's just better to file married, as you can get certain tax breaks. But if you want file single, you can. As long as your wife does to.

But like I told people, if you can stand sitting in the same general area as your spouse for 30 minutes, file Married-Jointley, you'll get more money back and you can just split it in half.
