In other words, what are some shows (in your humble opinion) that had a GREAT first season and unfortunately fell apart (call it "The Sophmore Jinx") when they came back?

Days Of Our Lives. Season 1 was great but seasons 2 - 567 sucked the big one.

Heroes. Season 1 was great, but Season 2 was a big letdown. It had some good parts, but it just took to long to get to the big quest and just wasn't up to par with the first season.
Lost also hit a wall in Season 2. It didn't get bad, but it slowed down when it should have sped up. That's why Season 4 was the best season so far; it went a mile a minute.

The first season of My Name Is Earl was great. The second season had a few poor episodes. By the time it hit the third season, it was unwatchable. I hear the fourth's even worse.

Yeah for a while LOST was really good at going real slow even if you don't realize it at first.

The Wire season 1 was outstanding. Season 2, not so much. They turned it around though in the later seasons.

Sliders did somewhat, but season three is when they really took a turn.
Oh, and Earl is definitely still watchable.

I've heard it said that House went in a negative direction after Season One but i wholeheartedly disagree.

Yeah for a while LOST was really good at going real slow even if you don't realize it at first. As has been stated, that was because the writers were waiting for ABC to agree to an end date. Once they had the end date they could go about telling the story they wanted and not have to drag out plotlines til they knew.

Gilmore Girls had a poor season 2, but they did set the table for better seasons later.

HEROES. Vol1- solid throughtout. Vol2- started out good. Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked in the middle. Last two eps were good Vol3 - started out excellent, Robert Forster is the bad guy! Then suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck last three eps were great
Vol4 looks good. Hopefully Loeb's stench is gone

Veronica Mars, season 1 was great. It had 2 excellent mysteries to start out, and kept building on those. Season 2 nowhere near as good, and had a WTF reveal as the mastermind of the mystery.

Gilmore Girls had a poor season 2, but they did set the table for better seasons later. I want to disagree with you, but I realized that I rarely watch reruns of season 2. Season 2 was all over the place. BTW I guess you weren't a fan of seasons 6&7?

I loved it, you couldn't tell the story of the drug trade of Baltimore without the docks. I loved it. Huff and Dead Like Me come to mind.

Las Vegas, or maybe I just got tired of the "single serving" episode bullshit.
Sliders is another one. By season 2 it was in the toilet. By season 3, I couldn't believe it was still on the air.

The first season of My Name Is Earl was great. The second season had a few poor episodes. By the time it hit the third season, it was unwatchable. I hear the fourth's even worse. I wouldn't say Season 3 was unwatchable, but it definitely strayed from what made the show so endearing. Whoever told you that about Season 4, however, needs to be corrected. Some of my favorite episodes from the series have aired in the first half of the newest season. Back on track, I'd add Oz to the list. Season 2, while still great television, was nowhere near as good as the show's 1st, 3rd, and 4th seasons.

What I was going to mention. I bought the first season with no plans on buying the rest. That first run was good from top to bottom with a phenomenal style and great story. Season two was sort of like "We're still here? Didn't we really say all we needed to last year? Oh well, here's some episodes suckers!".
