That he wasn't the absolute worst announcer WCW ever had? (that dishonor goes to Mark Madden)
The two are kind of flip sides of the same coin when you think of it. Mongo=everyone's worst stereotype of wrestling fans as people who are too stupid to do or watch anything else Madden=annoying, snarky commentator who killed any "organic" enthusiasm for the WCW product

He was medicore, not terrible. His 15 minute match ON PPV against Joe Gomez is beyond pointless booking.

Outside the arena when he and Jarrett were about to walk in, some kid asked if he could get Mong's autograp (on a paper plate). He and Jarrett then proceeded to put on a show for us otside (just a very funny exchanging of words).
1) he didn't mock the kid for using a paper plate 2) he signed it without hessitation 3) he did some good improve work with Jarrett (who also didn't mock the kid with the plate, just Mongo for kissing up to the fans)

But Mongo was the first to beat Goldberg.

Mongo was the one that got the 4 Horseman back together. The one that consisted of Flair, Anderson, Benoit, Malenko, and himself. For that, Mongo gets a pass in my book.

Awful as he was, he brought a dash of mainstream sports credibility to WCW right at the time they were throwing down the Monday-night gauntlet. And turning him into a full-time wrestler got them attention from ESPN.

For a guy who didn't start wrestling until his 40s, I didn't think he was really that bad for the year or whatever experience he had towards the end. He also had a little charisma. Not a lot, but again, probably above average for a guy who's only been in the ring for a year.

I liked his announcing skills...where he was a middleman, but not as thorough as Mike Tenay, or close to Bobby Heenan. He acted well down the middle and it didn't bother me. His ring work, the less said, the better.

I liked him when I was a kid.
However, that says...well, absolutely nothing.
I've gone back and watched his matches and they were...less than spectacular.

I started a thread a while back asking if Mongo was the biggest example of Wrestlecrap there is implying that he had no redeaming qualities and I still stand by that statement.
