I thought it was "Meh" at best.
Saints Row 2 was better IMO

Great game. Still a great boredom killer. What you gotta remember this is the first GTA game on this generation of consoles. So now that Rockstar have the hardware sorted out hopefully we will get a great GTA:(??) in a couple of years. Remember when GTA III came out. No motorbikes, no helicopters you could fly, no swimming and except for one Internet cafe and Salvatore's mansion you could not go inside any building. You could do bit more of those things in Vice City (except for the swimming) So the future is bright

The game itself was pretty good, but it suffered most in the music area. The thing I loved most about Vice City and San Andreas was having all that great music playing when I was driving around. There was nothing I liked in this one, or III for that matter.
Aside from that, after playing the hell out of Vice City and San Andreas I think I'm just GTA'd out and need to take a long break before I play another one. I never even finished this one.

I just suck at video games (don't think I ever finished the whole story in one), but my only complaint was it was too hard. Had fun with it at first but then got so frustrated always having to replay the same mission so many times then finally met one I couldn't get past after like 50 tries so I quit. They need to make a special easier difficulty setting for retards like me.

Two things I really liked in GTA IV were: 1. Keeping weapons after you died. 2. Skipping right to the start location of a mission if you had failed.
NOTHING was more frustrating in previous games then starting in one area if you died, driving for five minutes to get a gun, driving for ten more minutes to get to the start location of a mission then finally being able to do the mission...and then die again.

Even though I enjoy GTA 4, I find Vice City to be the best out of all of them, followed by GTA 3.

I got Lost and Damned the other day and wound up playing the main game instead. Gonna beat it again before I really try L&D.

I just HATE chase missions.
I didn't used to, but 3 other GTAs have lowered my resolve to chase endless guys down.

I liked Saints Row 2 better. SR2 had better music, and I got to create a hot chick to play as. The thing that killed GTA4 for me was being constantly called by guys on the phone wanting to go out on dates, then they get pissed off if you don't go out with them. I know Rockstar really likes promoting alternative lifestyles, but that was ridiculous.

Good point, that may be something that really impacted the game for me and didn't make it as memorable as the others. III was all new, so it could get away with anything it put on there (and being the Scarface soundtrack wasn't that bad). Vice City was the gold standard and I could drive around finding random things to ramp off of for hours by itself. San Andreas wasn't as good, but still good enough and you could drive for an hour from one side to the other. I didn't really like any station on IV and even Lazlo sounded tired, the news talk was kind of "meh" and nothing really stuck out. Personal tastes, no doubt, but it probably weighs in on me not really loving the game when put it terms of the series.

I know the people calling me often got annoying quick.
Thankfully I'd activate "Sleep Mode" on the phone and just do the missions or whatever I wanted with no interruption.

I still liked it over San Andreas. Just my opinion. This. I can go back and play SA, and it's fun...but something about GTAIV is just better to me. I can't quite figure it, but I just love it. San Andreas was just...too much game for me. The customization was cool, the huge environment was cool, but it was almost...too much of a huge environment. I can't tell you the amount of times I ended up friggin lost on a mission. And I hated that.

San Andreas for sure had too much to do at times. But for me the local was way more interesting, and the gameplay felt better. The cover mechanic in 4 is so freaking terrible, it ruined some of the game for me. And while the driving I can adjust to, I don't want to because the old driving was so much fun, even if it was super unrealistic. I played GTA for escapism! Unrealistic is fine.

I disagree. As much as I loved San Andreas back in 2004, I might have to rate this one slightly higher than it. I'd easily give it a 10, or at least a 9.95/10. When I got it, and first played the game, I honestly could not understand how people would find legitimate stuff to complain about. I mean, there were so many little improvements and things taken from other games that made it so cool. I just put the game in yesterday, and doing that construction worker mission for Playboy X is just as fun to me now as it was when I did it last April. For any adult gamer with a PS3 or XBox 360 not to have this in their collection is just incomprehensible to me. 2nd best game of 2008 in my view, right behind MGS 4. And by the way, for the people complaining about phone calls, all you have to do is agree to do something with a person, then call them right back and cancel your plans. That's all you have to do, and it won't negatively affect you.

I'm a GTA fan boy as well, but I will say this about it:
I liked it, but it wasn't nearly as good as it could have been. Without writing out a long-winded review I'll just make some short points that disapointed me:
- Soundtrack. The soundtrack was a big step backwards to me after the great ones of Vice City and San Andreas. There was to many no-name artists, and the artits I did know mainly had their B-Level songs on the game. Plus 2 raggea stations, but no Popular Modern Rock station?
- Lack of customization. Sorry GTA, I want to customize my cars. Period. I don't care if the character of Niko would or not. I want to.
- Lack of "Fun Factor". There just was something missing to this GTA to me. It seems like they took out quite a bit of the tounge-in-cheek nature that made this series. While it was still there, it wasn't as rampant as it used to be. I mean silly excretory matter like being able to drive tanks or put on a hockey mask and chainsaw.
- Lack of funny radio commercials and comments. There are a few, but very few of the radio commercials stood out to me like the old days. I can still think of the old Gigglecream, "Rated R for retarded", "Chill that bitch out with ice", and other commercials from the old days but I have a hard time recalling any commercials from this one other than Pisswasser. It's the same with the talk shows. I remember Fernando's crap, the old garden host skits, everything... I can barely tell you what they talk about on this one.
I actually prefer Saint's Row 2. GTA IV is a more graphically polished game, has a better story-line and is probably better voice acted, but SR2 just remembers the fact that it's a video game. It's just plain FUN. It remembers the fact that first and foremost it is a game.

"Did you do the interview yet?" "No" Lather, rinse and repeat for 5000 times.

I've been saying that from day 0, when websites and magazines were giving a collective fellatio to a game that wasn't even out yet.
GTA III was cool because it was the first 3D game of the series, Vice City had a great "funny retro" 80s vibe, but it was all very tongue-in-the-cheek, so the repetitiveness of the missions [something that had plagued the game since its 2D days, and that is inherent to the style of game] was mitigated by the whole fancy/funny atmospthere.
Then San Andreas introduced annoying "RPG" aspects such as eating, working out etc... things that killed the fun of the game. GTA IV is more or less a graphically enhanced version of SA, that was already a, complicated, graphically enhanced version of VC, that was a "mod" of GTA III
There are just so many times you can rehash the same old thing, just with a couple of new features and a fresh coat of paint, before it gets tragically and annoyingly old and boring.
Goofy GTA >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Serious GTA
