... Personally I would have loved it as he was by far my favourite wrestler at the time. I also think he would have definitely got the pop from the crowd. The most significant thing to come from it would be that we wouldn't have got Austin vs. The Rock at the following WM. Or then again we may have got that but without the title belt involved and probably not Austin's heal turn. who knows? All I know is that I would have loved Kane to win that year especially.
What are your thoughts?

I would've hated it. Sure its fun to see Kane toss people around in Rumbles, but outside of that he's never been someone that has entertained me. His matches are usually the same and he bores me to tears. To see him main-event a WM wouldn't have been something I would have looked forward to.

The year to push Kane to a WrestleMania main event was either 1998 or 1999. Anything after that was too late because he had lost much of his legitimate main event momentum.

I watched that again recently, and was he ever put over in that Rumble. Constant praise from JR, tossing 11 guys, reuqiring chair shots to eliminate him despite being in the ring for 40-odd minutes or so etc. But yeah, I couldn't have seen him headlining 'Mania. He did have that awesome hardcore match though, which probably would've been nowhere near as good without him.
2001 is my favourite Rumble match personally.

Kane's definitely in my top 5 favorites, but as much as I like him, I can't picture him main eventing WrestleMania. (Though having the sub-main matches against Undertaker at 14 and XX was a good merit.) They used him perfectly in that Rumble match. And I enjoyed the Hardcore Title match at WM X-7. Some Kane/Rumble trivia: Kane has been in the final four in the Rumble match four times (2000, 2001, 2003, 2008). Also, Kane has a total of 30 eliminations in the Rumble and has participated in 11 Rumble matches-- eleven years in a row. Kane calls the Royal Rumble 2001 match his finest performance.

If Kane would have won The '01 Rumble, he would have lost the main event at Mania.

He would've just lost the #1 contendership back to Austin the next night on Raw for old time's sake. Either that or pulled a Cena and used it at No Way Out and we would've had Angle vs. Rock vs. Kane. Either way he loses and is suddenly content to be battling for the hardcore title instead.

It would have made for a more entertaining rumble itself, but overall not a good idea when the next day rolls around.

it would have only worked in 2 ways...
1. undertaker beats kurt angle for the title at no way out, setting up the wm 14 rematch for the title at wm 17 (most likely taker would have won)
or...
2. he loses the title shot to either austin, rock, or hhh (I remember there being a rumor right after 01 nwo that the wm main event could have been a triple threat) at no way out
