It will probably fade from our memory sooner or later, until we re-hire Sable, Katie Vick, and "Gutter Slut Hunter" Kurt Angle till we're back to normal.

Yes, when this younger generation of fan gets older, similar to what happened in the 90s

When they actually have competition to worry about.
Don't say it TNA fans, just cause they on a good day beat ECW by a .1 doesn't mean that Vince is losing sleep.

Once they have Monday night competition again (wrestling wise), then it'll happen.

Does it need to?
A good wrestling match can be watched by anyone.

Yeah... wrestling fans typically have a limited lifetime as fans. You get into as a kid watch through high school.. by college, you're out. I'd say is how 90% of people I know are. Obviously there are exceptions to the rule.
So Vince has gone in cycles to recruit a large kiddy fanbase, then as they grow up the product grows with them. It also gives wrestlers double the TV stay time because big stars have to reinvent their personas to grow with the edgier product ie Bret Hart and Hogan last time around.

When Vince thinks that he can make more money with an "edgier" WWE, it will change, because he's Vince McMahon, dammit.

Doesn't really need to go back.
I think a lot of people look back at the Attitude era with rose-tinted glasses, so to speak. Yeah, the main event scene was spectacular, but otherwise, the midcard and the undercard was actually really poor.
Go look back at most shows from '99. That style wouldn't hold up today.
WWE is doing perfectly fine at the moment. They're climbing up the ratings without having to resort to the sleaziness of the late '90s. Good for them, I say.

Does it need to? A good wrestling match can be watched by anyone. But storylines and gimmicks set the match Storylines don't need to be adults only. (Savage/Hogan was a great feud but it wasn't for mature audiences only.) Gimmicks are not always needed for a good story in wrestling. Also to be fair what defines PG? The long running Jericho HBK feud was bloody but had great storytelling, was it pg?

But the problem is, as epic of a feud it was, it wasn't very bloody at all. Neither was the Edge/Undertaker HiaC match at SS. That therein is really the only flaw of PG WWE...almost no blood. I don't want blood every week, just in the blood feuds/high-profile matches where it would matter.

I was literally talking to my friend about this last week.
The way I see it, we are in the second go round of a cycle in the tv age.
Look at the 80's. Heavily geared toward kids with the characters. Kids are hooked. Then we enter the 90's. The kid fans from the 80's are starting to get a little bit older and thus the characters became more mature and the storylines a bit edgier. Now it's the late 90's and those kids from the 80's are now in high school and want to watch stuff that appeals to them so we get the Era of Attitude. The early 00's is holding onto the fans that are left as they hit the age where you either stay a fan or you move on (I determine this to be in one's early 20's).
It went from G to PG to PG-13/R Hogan to Hogan slowly fading out and jumping ship then we get Austin/Rock then we get HHH and now we are at Edge/Batista/Cena/coming up to Hardys.
Now, we are in 2009. Wrestling is back to PG. By the middle of the next decade we will be back to PG-13 and then for the first time fully reach R as tv becomes less monitored and censored.
Obviously, there is some variations to this cycle as far as fans and the action go. There is overlap. There are fans who come in at different times and leave at different times. As a majority though, it follows the cycle.
Cena is the late 00's Hulk Hogan. I know many hate that comparison (I do myself), but it's a fact. Cena is for the kids just like Hulk Hogan was.
