Awesome dude, I did my first stand-up show about 2 weeks back. Try not to be nervous, don't get drunk before you go on, imagine the audience is all naked etc etc. I had a lot of fun once I got over the initial fear, and relaxed into it. I tried to banter with the crowd a little bit to make myself feel at ease with them - my style was mostly storytelling-based with a few wacky puns thrown in. As long as you have an idea of what material you're gonna do, and put it in some sort of sequence, you'll be fine.
Best of luck to you buddy.

Cool man, good luck!! I haven't performed in 3 years now, but I use to once or twice a month for about 2 years. I agree completely with Bring Back the Headbangers, especially when he says don't get drunk! Most importantly have confidence in whatever it is you say up there. If you don't believe in what you're talking about, neither will the crowd.
And one final piece of advice and this is important; promise yourself before your set, that no matter how it goes (good, bad, in between), you will try again.

Well it works out because i dont drink. Im pretty comfortable in front of crowds im just not to sure about my act i have a few ideas kicking around but nothings set in stone. Im probably gonna hve to go with the story telling style because i have a few humorous anecdotes.

Well it works out because i dont drink. Im pretty comfortable in front of crowds im just not to sure about my act i have a few ideas kicking around but nothings set in stone. Im probably gonna hve to go with the story telling style because i have a few humorous anecdotes. Story telling is hard to do as a stand-up act (I don't think I could pull it off). Not impossible, but it's tougher than your standard set-up/punchline set. If you're going to go with story telling, make sure it's well thought out and make sure there are numerous set-ups/punches throughout the story. If more than 4 or 5 lines go by without a joke, the crowd will begin to get bored waiting for the punchline. Also, try to avoid winging it while you're up there (especially where you're new). It's one thing to play off the crowd and do something you feel in the moment, but it's a whole other to assume you'll be able to do that. Some of the best comedians who appear to be improvising while on stage have actually meticulously worked their acts out to appear that way. Improving is hard!! Make sure you know what you're going to say before you get up there and make sure you know how you're going to say it. Practice out loud to figure out what delivery works best for what line. Good luck!

Relax. An audience can smell fear.

I plan on going to an open mic sometime this summer after I turn 21. Good luck with your first go at it and don't feel discourage if you don't do that well. Most people who start out usually don't. It takes at least two to five years to come up with an hour of really good material. I have been writing material for over a year and a half now and I think I have some good stuff but I also know that I need to improve.

If I were you I'd basically do it scientifically.
Pick a few styles you're comfortable with...and at each show do a different one and see what works and doesn't.
Same thing with actual jokes.
I'm willing the first part of any comedians career is a tiral and error process of self discovery.

I think at my first stand-up gig I tried to squeeze too much into 10-15 minutes (basic jokes, stories, physical stuff), and ever since I've been trying to figure out ways to balance it out more.

Yeah that is usually how it works. the first couple of years doing stand up from what I heard is just used to find your voice and find the best way you are good at telling jokes. When I start I will have jokes that will involve social critism, story telling(mostly from my youth, very bill cosby influenced), and rediculous two or one liners. Hopefully I'm good at doing all of them but I won't know until I actually get up on stage this summer.

I'd love to try stand-up. I'm not the most confident of people, but I'd love to get out there and give it a go. Although I think Frankie Boyle might have the monopoly on miserable Scottish bastards.
