I've had this laptop for about a couple of years and only recently is it doing funny things.
The major one of those things being randomly shutting down on me and losing everything. No warning, no indication, it just shuts down. As a result, I lose what I'm doing.
I've thought this was just a problem with overheating (since most of my laptopping is done on my bed) so I try to make sure my laptop at least has some air on the bottom of it. It somehow only dodges the inevitable.
So recently, my laptop kept indicating to me that the cord wasn't charging the battery, which leads me to desperatly change the position of the cord before the battery runs out (because it would not last too long without it) before it shuts down the other way.
Just today, my laptop did this again and I decided to leave it for a while and see what happens. After a while, I turned it on again and it barely lasted a minute before it shut down completly again. Turned it on again, did the same thing albiet slightly longer before the shut down.
The third time lead to the same thing so I tried taking out the battery. As it turns out, it worked and nothing funny has happened (yet). Now, I'm not sure what to do. I'm sure I need to replace the battery because that seems to have been the problem but there might have been a factor I missed out on.
If anyone can help me, I'll very much appreciate it.

If it's not the battery, it's the cord...

Sounds like what happened to my laptop some time ago. It randomly started turning itself off like that at one point, and eventually it would no longer start at all, instead locking itself into a loop where it'd keep rebooting itself until I remove the battery.
Apparently, there is something wrong with the hard drive and/or operating system on my laptop, I forget which. I've been meaning to send it out for repairs for a while now.

If it's not the battery, it's the cord... It's definatly not the cord. It works perfectly now. The only time it wouldn't now is if I stupidly pulled it out of my laptop. To answer the other question, my laptop is a Toshiba Satellite Pro. Couldn't tell you the number off the top of my head.

I wouldn't know what that means. When you bought the laptop didn't it have a cd called system recovery? Reformatting is completely erasing all the files/applications. So you're telling me you haven't reformatted it in all these years? Maybe it's gotten some viruses already hence, the shutting down of itself

Well, I'll have to reask the people I got the laptop from, but I'm sure there is a feature built into the system where I can do that. Sort of like the new feature on Macs where you can go back and find out causes to problems.
Or something. I'll do another virus check just in case.

eJm, I started reading at the top of the thread and thought to myself, please don't say Toshiba. I've been in IT many years and Toshiba laptops are notorious for their bad motherboards. I'm not saying that's your problem but there is a good chance that it is. It could still be a battery problem but I wouldn't count on it. My good friend recently brought me his mom's Toshiba laptop that was only a couple years old to take a look at it and you guessed it, bad motherboard. I wouldn't even waste my time trying to reinstall everything at this point. I'm very sorry you wasted your money on a Toshiba but I can't recommend Acer enough if you decide to get another laptop. So sentiments not needed but thanks for letting me know that.

Glad to hear you didn't lose anything on your end since laptops can get pretty expensive. My friend's mom paid a good five or six hundred for this one she got from a Comp USA that was closing over here and it's pretty much a paper weight now. So how are things over the pond? eJm, I started reading at the top of the thread and thought to myself, please don't say Toshiba. Hectic, confusing yet somewhat enjoyable. So the usual kind of stuff.
