While I don't particularly care for AFI even during their "hey-day," one term I really hate is "sold out." A band can change their style any time, for whatever reason they want. Yes, money is a valid reason. Heaven forbid a band makes money from their music.

I hate the term sold out too. I generally enjoy bands efforts a bit more when they become more accessible. Modest Mouse is a good example. Their older sound was good but a little hard to get in to, but their new sound is easier to listen to and infinite times more catchy.
On topic. I hate Davy Havok so much. Even more than Chad Kroger. Actually no, I don't hate anyone more than Chad Kroger. They both have horrific voices though.

I'm not a big fan of the term "sold out" either. Most professional musicians choose their careers because of a paycheck and the chance to get big. Sure, there's the love of music, but very few people become and stay professional musicians JUST for that love of music. People need money to live their lives, raise families, and such.
A band can always evolve or change their sound so that it appeals to more people and they make more money. It's up to each individual fan to decide if this new direction sucks or not. I'm personally not a fan of the direction AFI's gone with Decemberunderground and I can't say I'm too excited about the new album they're working on (we'll see about that), but I won't ever say they sold out.

I want a mohawk but my mommy won't let me get one. That's all the more reason to get one.

I started with Sing the Sorrow, then worked backwards, but I only got Very Proud of Ya and Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes, in addition to at least listening to plenty of just random songs from their catalog. I like all of that stuff, but I prefer their sound now to their old sound. And Decemberunderground is my favorite album of theirs so far. I didn't particularly care one way or the other for it at first, but I like it more and more with repeat listens.

It was the first single off their first album with a major record label, so after they "sold out."

AFI evolved into garbage long ago. The following is the most vivid example of their fall from grace. While I could never really take their fashion sense seriously, let's look at some of the pretentious posturing that the current incarnation of the band does now. Old AFI: New AFI: That Jade character (Dr. Blight haircut in the third picture) is the worst. What a bunch of snorking divas.

Oh no, they care about what they look like! How truly awful!
What the f*** does it matter what a band looks like either way?

I randomly add songs to my iPod, so forever I was loving 'The Missing Frame' with no clue what it was

Oh no, they care about what they look like! How truly awful! What the snork does it matter what a band looks like either way? It represents their image and their current attitudes. I'd say a band's look, especially one as drastic as AFI's (like when Davey Havok went from blond punk to White Michael Jackson wannabe), says a lot about them.

Or, y'know, people change.
Davey was pretty f***ing young when AFI started.
I've changed a lot since I was a teenager, too.
It happens.

Black Sails... is still my favorite record of theirs, although I really like Sing the Sorrow, The Art of Drowning, and Shut Your Mouth, Open Your Eyes, in that order. I like Decemberunderground, I think there are like 5 fantastic songs on that record, but at the same time, I think it's also kind of a standstill for A.F.I. I think their next record is kind of a make-or-break, if they can't find something new and cohesive, this might be it for them. Or, it might be amazing.
I don't like their old hardcore punk sound on Very Proud of Ya and Answer That and Stay Fashionable, even though I like plenty of bands in that vein. I don't think that was their niche, but I think they really found it with Black Sails. Shut Your Mouth was kind of a transition record, but the first A.F.I. song I remember is "Third Season." Black Sails was like the mecca for me, but they couldn't really expand on that sound past The Art of Drowning. I think they went in a reasonable, if not entirely focused direction. They're kind of cheesy at this point, but I still like them. The Blaqk Audio record is okay too, but I don't like it like I like A.F.I.
I don't like how they've been kind of the poster boys for a weird scene of teenage "goths," but, whatever. I'm kind of old, so I guess I don't "get it." I'm okay with that, and can look past their fanbase when objectively listening to their records. Maybe it's because I remember their Black Sails days, when they were really just a punk band, but I don't think they've necessarily "sold out." If I was them, I'd be trying to make some money too!

No it's not.
Scene kids don't play hardcore punk.
