I have wondered this for a while:
In a movie, does the actor exist? Let me explain, say in the Dirty Harry Movies. Clint Eastwood is Harry Callahan. Harry Callahan is who he is and that is who lives in that world.
But does Clint Eastwood exist there? Say Harry Callahan wanted to go see a movie like Every Which Way but loose after a day on the job. Can he see it? Would Eastwood be in the film? Or would all Eastwood things not exist or have another actor in that role?

I think Last Action Hero and Looney Tunes : Back in Action answer this question.

I was thinking of Last Action Hero too. I wonder what it would have been like if Sly was in the Terminator instead of Arnold.

Lol, you must be very bored!

There was another movie, fairly recent I think, that dealt with an actor playing a character as well as himself, and was mistaken for...uhm, himself.

Im talking about Fiction on Top of Fiction Terminator watching Conan James Bond (Connery) watching The Longest Day. And Yes, I am bored. I was watching Any which way you can.

In Ocean's Twelve, there's a part where Danny Ocean's wife (played by Julia Roberts) pretends to be Julia Roberts. And the whole plan is blown to hell because Bruce Willis just HAPPENS to be in Rome at the exact time they're trying to steal the...whatever it was, and Bruce Willis could tell it was a fake, because apparently they're friends in real life, or whatever.
But then again, Ocean's Twelve wasn't that good of a movie either way, so whatever.
That one does prove that the actor does exist in the movie's world, though.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I've seen that a few times. For some reason, I'm certain a couple of Stephen King movies played up this to a degree, where a character was watching a Stephen King movie or reading a Stephen King book - not EXACTLY what you said, but close. Kevin Smith's done it in a roundabout way with so many actors playing various parts in his connected films. Affleck and Damon are themselves making a film in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the sequel to Dogma where they're angels. I think there was at least one reference in there somewhere - maybe a Jason Lee bit - where someone comments on the crappy acting in a film they watched - and the character was someone that same actor had played.

JFK, from wikipedia: The real Jim Garrison, a severe critic of the Warren Commission, ironically played Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren himself, during the scene in which he questions Jack Ruby in prison about his retrial. Supposed assassination witness Beverly Oliver, who claimed to be the Babushka lady, also appeared in a cameo role.

Sometimes, it just depends on how the movie is written.

JAY&SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK answers this question. Ben Affleck appears as Holden from CHASING AMY, but is also Ben Affleck on the set of GOOD WILL HUNTING 2: HUNTING SEASON. Matt Damon who was in CHASING AMY and DOGMA appears in it as well. Shannon Elizabeth plays Justice, and Jay asks Jason Biggs if he had sex with the actress that played the foriegn exchange student in AMERICAN PIE (who was Shannon Elizabeth)

So, if the actor exists in that world, would the actor also be playing the character in a movie while the character, who is not the actor, watches it? So could Dirty Harry figure out who the killer is by watching Dirty Harry, the movie? Would there be a scene in Dirty Harry where Dirty Harry the character watches himself watching himself watching the movie? What do you think, Edge and Vickie?

In other words, if Clint Eastwood exsisted in Dirty Harry's world, all the Clint movies would exsist EXCEPT the Dirty Harry ones.

All Clint Eastwood movies would still exist, except his part would be played by Gary Coleman.

Explain the Double Dragon movie to me then, please.
Since, you know... the movie was based on a video game that gets a cameo in the actual movie.
