For me this topic begins with Stairway to Heaven. Its not about going to heaven and its not about love. This song has been a prom staple for generations and I can't count how many people have told me its a great love song, while telling me they hate devil music like Manson or such. This song has made me lose faith in people's ability to understand words strung together more than anything else.

I've heard the band said the song has actually no meaning whatsoever and they just wrote down stuff they thought sounded good.

I once convinced my English Class that Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen was actually a summery and interpretation of Albert Camus' The Stranger.
1. I'm actually not sure if this is true or not, but it does fit.
2. It would make no sense if it did, but its a great story.

"Alive" by Pearl Jam. People construed the song as being an uplifting one about being a survivor, but Eddie Vedder intended it to be a song about despair after living through childhood trauma. The "I'm still alive" wasn't meant to sound determined and strong, but was meant to convey despair, wondering why he was allowed to live while people around him were dying and he was undergoing so much hardship. Still, Eddie has acknowledged the fans' interpretation, and said that he appreciates how the fans turned a negative song into a positive one. Don't forget "Betterman" the ignorant think it's some sweet love song when in reality it's about an abusive relationship. Whenever I heard some moron girl request that song for a lover,I always waited for the cops to show up at their house.

Weezer's Beverly Hills:
The girl I was dating at the time said she hated the song because she thought the message the song was putting out there was terrible.
Apparently she never listened to the last lyric of the song.
Also, I was having a conversation about a lot of recent crunk songs that basically degrade women every which way and her defense of liking them was, "No, those songs are about strippers, not regular women - so its different."
Pretty much any extremely popular crunk song is about the rapper being the biggest player ever and how women should just shut up and shake thier ass on the dance floor [amongst other things].
Like a lot of people she didn't actually want to listen to the lyrics and just shake her ass at the club. Fullfilling the song's request.
Its funny how life can be cyclical like that sometimes.

This Love - Maroon 5
For the record, I've seen this song on albums for kids. Here's some lines from it:
"My pressure on your hips Sinking my fingertips Into every inch of you Cause I know that's what you want me to do"

I mean, people REALLY don't listen to lyrics or what? Even in their own language?!

I believe that song "Milkeshake" pretty much answers that question with a resounding "no" or Tomko-esque proportions.
