Yeah, that episode "Conspiracy" was always damn weird to me, it was like Star Trek was briefly replaced with a a sci-fi horror show as opposed to treking across the galaxy.
It still bugs me to this day that those insect aliens never came back for revenge even though it was so perfectly set up.

Maybe they wanted to try a new, edgier Star Trek, about a maverick captain who doesn't play by the rules.
And then they realized it sucked royally, and went back to what worked.
If only directors could do that with most movies these days.
