The NFL one went well, so lets do it with the National Hockey League. What would you change to make the NHL better? Would you add more teams? Relocate some? Remove some? Televise Minor League games? Note. Unlike NFL there is also an extensive minor league associated with it: AHL ECHL IHL › CHL SPHL USHL EPHL So what would you change? NFL Thread

Move the expansion teams in to Canada. The fact that we have more teams than them shocks me.

Its is what it is and if you take it as an a glorified fan fest and a break for the rest of the players and leave that alone.

Stop letting 16 of the 30 teams make the playoffs. Think about that, 16 teams make it, and only 14 don't. What's the point of the regular season when you let more than half of the teams in anyway? Why not just a big ass tournament?

Make hockey fights legal!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Every NHL game would be sold out!!!! Here in Independence, Missouri(just outside of Kansas City) we are getting a minor league team. The last minor league team we had in Kansas City were called the Blades and they got in a fight just about every game which is why they stayed for so long. This new team's owners are from Texas and say it will be very rough so that means..............LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!!! I just thought of more.................mix hockey with MMA. Teach the MMA guys how to skate and the hockey guys how to fight and we got a milliion dollar idea. ;D

;D Come on you can't tell me that isn't the greatest thing ever.
Listen to the commentators. Hockey announcers are the best because they are so laid back about the fights. In basketball and stuff the announcers sound like wussies saying how disrespectful it is while the announcers in hockey are like hell yeah we got a fight. lol

The biggest issue with the NHL is marketing. It's something that they are working on, but they're growing very slowly at it.
Crosby, Malkin and Ovechkin are being well marketed, but more needs to be done. It's only been since the lockout that they have started refocusing on making American's interested again.
There's only a handful of players most people know whereas even the most casual of fans can name 20 players in the NBA, MLB or NFL.
Another problem is the league keeps trying to save teams in markets that are never gonna support the team. If the fans out coming to games and caring about games, the league has the force the owners hand a offer incentives for them to move to a different market. It may take a while, but eventually you can find a market for any team currently in the league.
Look at the Devils, they moved 2 or 3 times before the found a market that embraced them, and they've never looked back. If Tampa's not working out, try Seattle, or Hamilton.
Those 2 things I think are tied together, you can't market if no one wants to be receptive, and if no one's cares about your team you can't turn a profit. I think those are the biggest keys to building the NHL
EDIT: If it came down to it, I wouldn't be opposed to cutting out a couple teams either but would prefer moving them to a new market

They need to reduce the number of teams. The talent pool is so watered down now. Drop some of the current NHL teams to the minors.
Also there should be at least 2 teams if not more moved to Canada (Winnipeg or Hamilton or Quebec City).
I'm thinking 22 or 24 teams. Bring back the Wales & Campbell conferences.
As for the playoffs. It's difficult, 16 is too many but 8 may not be enough....

Why not just a big ass tournament? 8 Team Playoff would make the Regular Season a whole lot more interesting. The NBA has the same issues. When you have a ton of games and so many teams make it to the playoffs... it just loses it's tension.
