Alphabet, writing, printing press, the Internet. Something along those lines.

The Ablilty to control Fire.
Without it, we would still be living around the Equator, with nothing better then wooden, bone, and flint rock tools.

1. Domesticated plants and animals / agriculture Without this, nothing else would have been possible. The ability to provide food in a regular, predictable schedule allowed people to settle into communities.
2. The written word The ability to codify speech in a fixed form allowed for laws, records, and ultimately thoughts to be preserved and transferred.
3. The printed word The mass production and replication of written works allowed for the spread of literacy, the spread of education, and the creation of both art and science in a global world.
4. The condom More than its birth control properties, the ability to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and infections is arguably even more important than some of the above. Tracing back to tied off pieces of animal intestine in Roman times, the condom and its predecessors has been integral in containing myriad epidemics, especially HIV. The opposition to the condom's use to prevent the spread of AIDS in Africa is basically a position supporting genocide.

Leaving aside the veracity of any metaphyisical claims, Religion.
Oh, don't get me wrong, the mystical inquiry into Great Mysteries of the orgins and the purpose of creation are worth endevours that have enriched us as a people, and provides unity and purpose to billions. But what I'm getting at is usually is what considered the devil by some, Organized Religion, aka the Clerical Class.
1. Transcending Clan: Early man was organized by clan lines. Religion shifted authority from Cheiften to Priest. People may not have the same ancestor, but they can have the same gods. Those Preists often become Kings, as seen in Egypt and Japan.
2. Clerics: Most Cultures can be divided between the Patrician and the Pleb. The early nobleman was a warrior. The growth of religion required part of the nobility to abandon warfare, and take up learning, education and knowlege. These clerics eventually specialized, providing the foundation for the arts and sciences. It's hard to see how a knight becomes anything but a better knight, but it's easy to see how a monk in his study becomes a scientist in his lab.

Big question for all you guys. What do you think is the most important invention in the history of mankind? The wheel? The plow? The printing press? The Internet? Hot Pockets? What do you think? I'm gonna go with the transistor, with Hot Pockets a close second.

Kentucky Long Rifle. That gun made it able for regular people to own guns that then led to the uprisings of the 1700's. Without that gun there would be no American or French Revolutions. When the common people controlled weapons that were on the same level as what the governments had, then things changed. No politics! Where are the mods when you need them?! My answer is the sandwich. I don't wanna wait to eat until after my game of Chinese Checkers, I'm hungry NOW!

The projectile weapon. It (in the form of the bow and arrow) possibly helped Archaic Homo Sapiens wipe out the Neanderthals (according to one popular and plausible theory).

Those Preists often become Kings, as seen in Egypt and Japan. This still hasn't really happened, and we frequently still think along tribal lines. Fire has been the big one, most others wouldn't have come without that.

I would agree with agriculture and the domestication of animals. It's something we really take for granted. I would disagree with the pill and condom. Without them perhaps we would be more discriminating when selecting a mate and exercise personal responsiblity in our actions. I know the benefit of preventing disease but if we were to only have one or two people in our lives we engaged in relations with, these diseases would be nearly non-exsistant. The world would be a better place if we didn't give in to our biological urges whenever it was convienent. Wishful thinking, I know, and a bit unrealistic but thats how I feel.

personally speaking, i guess its an even split between fire and mathematics. both distinguished us from our ape ancestors and allowed us to thrive and eventually Duminade the environment.
