I've narrowed it down to those two since they seem like the best entry points, for me atleast, into roguelike games. I was told by other people that pokemon mystery dungeon (yes those games if you're not familiar with roguelikes) would be a good introduction but the multiple person combat system looks badly designed from what I can tell. So I'm down to a guy in a cool hat: Or a ninja feeling the effects of the current economic crisis: p.s. trying to find that image of izuna led to some hilarious/disturbing images constantly popping up.

I'd go with Shiren the Wanderer, as it's from the developers who basically set the standard for the Console Roguelike genre. It's a port of one of the first ones out there.
