The only real annoyance is the Swerve at the end of Empire. "No, Luke, I AM YOUR FATHER!!!" is pretty meaningless if you watched the first three films first. Also, the big reveal for Leia in Return is ruined, well, it's not like Luke had any other options, I mean, Mon Motha? However, the Naboo and Imperial Center scenes are useless without the Prequales.
I favor the special edition over the original presentation. In fact, my major hope for the archival edition, is that Mara Jade is digitally inserted into every scene she should be in, just out of sight. For that, heck, the Death Star can fire first to make sure Luke isn't in the wrong, if Lucas so desires.

Most of the changes made to the OT were either stupid or pointless, but there are a few that I actually like. Ian McDiarmid in ESB makes sense just for the sake of consistency, the new music at the end of Jedi is way better than that horrible Ewok song, and I think the Jabba scene in ANH helps to better tie the whole Trilogy together. Overall though I do prefer the original presentation.

if watching them for the first time, I go with 4-6, then 1-3 since that was the way I was grown to watching. But if you seen them all countless times (like me) then its fine to watch in story order or any order you choose.

I want to mix Original Jedi with 1996 ending because I prefer the new music (Jedi was ruined in the 1996 & DVD versions).
But the other two weren't ruined by the special edition format, IMO they were improved (Aside from Greedo shooting first)

My order: III, IV, V, VI with original ending.
I couldn't give a rat's butt about I or II. III is passable.

Random question, but how many VHS releases did the Original Trilogy get? Is it just the 3, because I'm tryin' to buy each version on VHS. (Because I'm a nerd like that)
I've got the '97 Special Edition release, and I know there was the '95 THX remaster and the original release. Any I'm missing?

III, IV, V, VI.
I and II depress me. III does too, but it's better than the first 2 and was the closest I got to seeing the prequels that I had in my head since 1983.

Watch the original trilogy, assuming you love it wait a minimum of five years and watch the prequels in order to replicate that authentic sense of disappointment.

Also try to watch them with someone who has never seen the films before. Watch as their face goes from joy to depression. then watch spaceballs.

I love both trilogies. If I ever have kids, they will grow up with them like I did. IV, V, VI and then I, II, III. This hate of the prequel trilogy has gotten so old, it doesn't even matter to me anymore, they're still great movies. People hate them because they are 100% like they spent 20 years dreaming they were "Supposed" to be.

Watch them in Production Order. Make sure you watch the ORIGINAL versions of IV, V, and VI. it does't make any difference (and please don't say "han shot first ) the newer effects and t extra scenes are worth it it wuld be worth getting the republic commando seies of books..you elise that the jedi (well the older generation WERE pricks ) Han DID shoot first dammit!!! When seeing that scene for the first time, it was pretty funny and a lot of people thought it was cool. It didn't bother me (or anyone else) and it didn't effect our appreciation for Han. It made him even cooler. Then Lucas goes and changes it because he feels it's "bad" and shows Han in a negative light. If so, he should change the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark when Indy shoots the big swordsman instead of fighting him. Indy didn't "fight fair" so Lucas should change that too. I really don't mind the added effects works of the special editions, but this was really wrong - it undermines the character. It's like what he did with Boba Fett in Jedi, adding that scene where Boba's flirting with one of Jabba's dancers..it's jarring and "wrong". Yes, I am aware of how much of a fanboy I am.

Watch them as 1-6. That way the last three movies will help make you forget Hayden Christianson's craptastic acting.
And when you are all done, your brain will instead be filled with the Ewoks singing that awesome "Yub Yub" song.

Watch Spaceballs first. Then watch Ep. I-VI. Then watch the Family Guy and Robot Chicken SW episodes. And if you can find it, watch that documentary about the making of the original trilogy that came with the OT boxset. Then watch Spaceballs again.

actually Fett wasn't flirting the books explain that too and even if he was its all good..its Fett dammit he does what he wants.. hes the Chuck Norris of Star Wars, just ask Jodo Kast
i think in the dvd releases han and greedo shoot at the same time (though you can put greedos shot down to a reflex of being shot ) which to me makes up for it a lil
ilove howpeople put so uch hate on the prequels.. think of them as the first 3 sections of a book they are slow scene setting ones.. aand the OT is the good bits near the end, IMO there is no way they could or shoul have asll been top drawer stuff, its like episode 1..comapred to te others the final battles (except the Maul bits ) were low key and crappy, but if it was like..saythe battlesinthe OT in scale itwouldn't of made sense
IMO watching 1 to 6 is the best way..
imagine if you saw two towers and return of the king..THENwatched Fellowship..it would seem tame compared to the others..
