I know a muscial isnt the manliest of things. But I've been listening to the songs from this again and I just wanted to mention it to everyone. This is the one thing that my ex fiancee got me into that I can still enjoy. I've been to it live twice, and it was worth the 80 dollar tickets. I've never been into any other musicals besides this one, I just love the songs and the story.
I mean any musical with hookers and war has to be worth some attention eh? I dont believe its touring anymore in the US, and that the only place you can really see it now is in London. But the songs are out there. So are there any other fans?

I haven't seen the musical itself, but I do own a vinyl record copy of it. And it's great.

I saw the play in Toronto when I was a kid, and then again with my fiancee a couple of years ago. I absolutely love it - have the BBC DVD, the soundtrack...
Our hamsters' names? Eponine, Cossette, Javert, Fantine...
And, just as I tend to like the heels in wrestling, I've always had a soft spot for Javert in the musical. I recognize his folly but pity him.

My parents just directed the high school version of it this past year (I played in the pit band); we had wanted to do the show when I was a senior back in 2003, but since we were too close to NYC and the show was JUST finishing up on Broadway, we couldn't get the rights.
Definitely my all-time favorite musical, and one of my favorite books. I still dream that one day I will get to play Javert...just have to find a place I can audition, I suppose.

Like you I'm also a Javert mark. I also like Eponine because I think we can all symphathise with a character who wants someone they can't have. The difference with Eponine is that she accepts it, I mean we all do, but she seems to do it in a way that seems to be different. BBC DVD? Please tell me there is a region 1 version of it, I've wanted this on DVD for god knows how long.

I saw this ages ago on Broadway. It was enjoyable, though I think I was too young at the time (it was a school trip and I was 11) and would probably appreciate the story even better now.
Also, the other day I had "Castle on a Cloud" in my head for no reason whatsoever.

Do you hear the people sing? Singing the songs of angry men? It is the music of the people who will not be slaves again! When the beating of your heart, Echos the beating of the drums...
And if I die, Let me die, Let him live, Bring him home
Two pieces of music that make me well up uncontrollably every time I hear them.

When my parents did the show this year, you could tell who had or who hadn't ever seen the show before based on how they react to Gavroche's final scene. YIKES.
And yes, I saw the show multiple times on Broadway, and each time I had to challenge myself to make it through without weeping like a baby. Suffice it to say, once the violin swell during Valjean's final scene began, I was done.

One of the absolute saddest and best musicals ever. I always cry during "Little Drop of Rain" "Javert's Suicide" and "Fantine's Death."
I kinda hate that as soon as Marius and Cossette get married and happiness seems to be on the horizon, dumb ol' Valjorn friggin' dies. Also how those idiots that had Cossette for so long didn't really get their justice...I would have liked to see them die horribly and painfully.

Yup, I got it at Sunrise records in Burlington Ontario, region 1... it's out there, but somewhat costly ($40).

Read the book: the Thenardiers are the biggest villains of all in it (as Javert is Valjean's antagonist, but still a principled man), and their fates are somewhat different than the show...not exactly what you're looking for, but definitely different. The book does have quite a few key differences, but the musical is shockingly close to the main story of the book, given the mass of the source material. Biggest difference is probably Marius. Frankly, in the book, Marius is kind of a douche.
