He was AWESOME at X-7...and I loved how dickish he was to JR, who would then in turn give it right back to him.
And YET they somehow NEVER degenerated into forgetting about the match at hand, which is more than I can say lately for most any of the teams, though how much if that is them, and how much is Vince in the headset, is hard to say.

Wow. After reading all these posts I almost hate to say that I could not stand Paul Heyman on commentary. I thought he was repetitive and when he was yelling, which was most of the time, his voice was like a railroad spike in my ears.

I remember reading somewhere that JR genuinely didn't like Heyman and Heyman would say and do things on commentary to piss him off, which lent itself better to their pro WWF/ pro Alliance split. But yes, Heyman is, was, and will always be, gold on the mic. As a matter of fact I try to channel him a bit whenever I have to give speeches in public, or rally up a group of people for a cause. JR has said in his blogs that he's always loved commentating with Paul E, because he gives a different challenge. His unhappiness at the time stemmed from Lawler's departure.

Paul E.s greatness is summed up in one exchange. From Survivor Series 2001:
Paul E. "Why doesn't Earl Hebner ring the bell?"
JR: "THe Rock hasn't tapped yet."
Paul E. "That never stopped him before!"

I liked it. I was a shame when Lawler walked out at the time, but he picked up the role well. Speaking of Lawler, I haven't found him interesting in a long time. Now he just seems to pander after the faces. Lawler of New Generation and beyond was sharp like a razor. Lalwer sucks now. He's completely worthless. Unfortunately, that describes the state of almost every announcer out there now. Seriously, my biggest complaint with WWE now is their lack of heel commentators. They made boring matches decent to watch. Since I got Tivo I pretty much fast forward thru all the matches now. They are just a waste of time.

About his relationship with JR, Heyman has been put over repeatedly in JR's blog about being one of the best minds in the business and a guy he keeps in touch with. I doubt there's heat between those two.
Regarding Heyman's style as an announcer, much like he did putting over Rhyno, he did with guys like Test and Albert. His selling of Albert as the "Moyle of Mayhem" and the "Machuginator" made me legitimately believe that this guy was a bad ass. And it was f***ing ALBERT!!!! So yeah, much like he did in ECW, his thought process was to accentuate the positives and hide the negatives. I miss Paul E.'s influence on every wrestling show I watch. Imagine him booking TNA or ROH. The "Extreme" style was what the fans yearned for at the time but when Paul came to WWE, he still knew what it took to get guys over with the WWE style. In short, he is wrestling's mad scientist and it's a shame that he isn't involved as a booker or involved in the creative process in some organization. Paul simply knows how to create superstars.

Wow, I always forget that Heyman was a commentator. Which is bad on my part, because he was so damn good. As someone else on here pointed out, it was his enthusiasm.

I got into wrestling during the very later part of the Invasion, like around Survivor Series. Being a mark, I hated Heyman, thought he was a fat bastard, though I quickly learned to like him as I got more into it. I loved the night after Survivor Series when McMahon rehired and then fired Heyman and Heyman attacks JR and gets taken out.

This made me a Heyman fan. Keep in mind I had no idea about ECW or his creative talent at the time.

When Heyman took over, I was so sick of Lawler so I though it was the greatest thing ever.
Heyman was awesome at being the confrontational asshole and I always enjoyed his commentary. I was furious when Lawler came back, and sure enough, it was right back to the same Lawler I had hated when he left.
I do find Lawler much more tolerable now tho, but I don't really acknowledge the Raw commentary

I freaking loved Paul E. on commentary. As many others have said, the way he was able to banter with J.R. while still putting over the talent and matches made his presence fantastic. I really miss him on commentary, and wish that someday he'll return because I'd absolutely love more Heyman commentary.

Paul E. on commentary = Purely Outstanding. And Ross and Paul had done hosting and commentary in NWA/WCW in 1990 and 91 so they had this unique chemistry where they'd always bitch at each other and banter back and forth in the most entertaining ways. As for Lawler: "He stinks and I don't like him!"

He was fantastic from the moment he started. Him and JR had great chemistry, and he pushed JR to do his best unlike King. They've just gotten too comfortable and don't really try anymore.

Heyman is up there in my book as far as a commentator. He can put anyone over and his comments echo his philosophy about accentuate the positives and hide the negatives. Hell, if Chris Harris debuted in ECW under Heyman, he would have gotten over too.
