Would Michael Hayes as Dok Hendrix the "Merchandise Shill" be wrestlecrap worthy ? Think all Michael Hayes had accomplished in wrestling up until this point, with his cutting edge "freebird" character. Then he goes to the WWF in 1995 and undergoes a complete transformation He goes from being the badass rebel to a grown man marking out over HBK sunglasses and Bret Hart t-shirts. I was watching the Midnight Express shoot interview a while back, and Stan Lane talks about how Vince McMahon wanted to move him from being a color commentator to being the merchandise geek. So then, Stan Lane quit and Vince got Hayes to fill the role. If you haven't seen some of the those merchandise spots WWF did with Hayes, he was just really over the top with plugging those t-shirts, toys, video games, and whatever else came out.

He goes from being the badass rebel to a grown man marking out over HBK sunglasses and Bret Hart t-shirts. That's a funny line. I thought it was terrible what Hayes turned into, though who do you blame more -- the WWF for turning him into a joke, or Hayes for agreeing to do it? I thought they were finally going to salvage things when they had Michael Hayes come out as "himself" to confront Kane that time in '97, but he just got creamed and that was it.

i'll have to check with RD to make sure Dok Hendrix hasn't been inducted yet cause I agree with his 100% Wrestlecrapness.
Didn't he also manage the Hardys at one point?

Yeah he did for a very short time in 1999 (I think it was) As wrestlecrap as he was an as overboard an 'stuck in the 80's'. I actually enjoyed him on commentary but still think he should get inducted. I don;t however see what was wrong with or so bad with Todd Pettingill (off topic I know). He gets a lot of flack but I think he fitted in well in The New Generation Era'

He was back to Michael Hayes when he managed the Hardys though.
Yeah, (Wwwwweeellllll) Good Ole Handsome Dok was pretty bad snice he was so great as Michael "PS" Hayes. But really he made the best of it. He shilled merchandise and PPVs and live events on the SLAM JAM~! But he also did entertaining work announcing with Vince McMahon on Superstars in 1995 and made a show with Todd Pentingiil not totally unwatchable when they co-hosted Action Zone. The man was a miracle worker. It was Wrestlecrap, but the respectable John Tenta style Wrestecrap where he did the best he could with it.
And really he didn't do too much merchandise shilling. He did do some (I do remember him decked out in cheap HBK shades and hat and possbily clip-on earrings so please track that down if you can, Kelly) but Barry Didinsky did the majority of shills and Hendrix just did regional house show plugs on Superstars and PPV plugs on the USA Network shows. Not that that's all that more respectable, since he had to pretend like we should be excited or King Mable and Tatanka matches, but Barry Didinsky probably cried himself to sleep more often.

Did you ever see the DVD (or VHS) release of Shawn Michaels Boyhood Dream. It was Shawn Michaels title reign in 1995 and his best matches of that reign. With Doc Hendrix hosting the DVD. He was in full blown Hendrix mode throughout the DVD and shilling Michaels merchandise it was pretty disturbing Yeah he was back to Micheal Hayes by the time he was managing the Hardys. Also he was a playable character in either N64 Wrestlemania 2000 or Nor Mercy. I forget which one. I think McMahon bringing Hayes in as Doc Hendrix is McMahon still stuck behind the times and running with something which may have worked 5 or 10 years before Hayes came to WWF. Also during 'The New Generation Era' the were marketing almost strictly to kids. Which with Doc Hendrix gimmick in a way fitted right in with the times. He was almost like a kids children program presenter in a way

it's amazing that Vince completely changed the character of a man who drew as much money as Michael Hayes into a shilling machine

it's amazing that Vince completely changed the character of a man who drew as much money as Michael Hayes into a shilling machine Well when Vince tried to get Stan Lane to do it, Stan said something like, "I didn't come this far in my career to shill your crap" and Vince snapped back, "I don't recall you having much of a career". Yep, Stan's run as one half of the Fabulous Ones, Midnight Express and Heavenly Bodies don't mean a thing to Vince because he never watched any other wrestling tv besides his own. And his attitude is, "if I didn't make you a star in the WWF, you're nothing".

I still don't understand how the name DOK HENDRIX was supposed to get over in the 90s. Hayes said it was a tribute to two of his favorites, Jimi Hendrix, who, granted, will always be considered cool, and Dokken, who most certainly hadn't been considered cool since the year turned over to 1990.
