I find it funny that a bank has no problems putting a hold on your account when there is too much activity on a holiday and there is no one to get a hold of to fix that so you can actually spend your money.
Ironically, if you DID lose your card and someone was using it without your consent, you wouldn't be able to notify your bank about it, because no one is there outside of an automated system that feeds you in circles and asks you to call the next business day.
.....
Damn banks.

Indeed. My personal gripe is that I have 3 different balances -- a "current" balance, an "available" balance, and the balance I get at the ATM which is sometimes different than the others. There have been times I check my balance on the phone line or online, and see that I still have, say, 50 bucks or so, then go to use my card and get denied because that balance is different. Many times my actual balance never dips below zero, either, it just blocked me from using it for a few days and then it pops back up again. So weird. If I didn't have my car loan there, I'd have switched banks by now.

I despise, loathe, detest, and distrust banks. Are you seriously telling me that in this day and age where you can literally wire money halfway across the world in 30 seconds, it still takes 5 to 7 BUSINESS days for a check to clear? f*** the whole lot of 'em.

About a month ago I went to the bank with a five hundred dollar deposit. I go through the drive through, put it through the tube, and wait.
And wait.
And wait.
....and wait.
I'm the only outside customer at the time mind you. They finally come over the intercom. Apparently, the tube arrived with NO MONEY IN IT. Now, these geniuses, what do they do? Do they check the camera to see if I put anything in the tube? No. Do they check the tubing system to see if anything is in there? No. They ask me, no less than four different times, "Uh, sir, are you positive you put anything in this tube?" No dip shit, I imagined I made a deposit. They have me sitting there 45 minutes in line while they finally decide that checking the security tapes outside might be a good idea. They find out I'm not an insane thief, and tell me they're looking in to it. They balance the entire drawer for the drive through, nothing. That takes another 15 minutes. After almost 75 minutes, they say they're calling in maintenance to check the under ground system and tell me they'll call me if they have anything.
......
I kind of need that deposit, so don't tell me "if" anything. Finally they call 4 hours later and let me know they found it. Apparently the tube system was log jammed and mine knocked a stuck empty one out.
I go inside from now on. Point being, I hate banks.

I tried opening a bank account with my state tax refund check and was told it would take 9 days for the check to clear.

I am relatively sure my bank thinks I died, since I haven't written a check in more than a year.

Tell me about it. Because I didn't have a credit history of any kind when I originally signed up for a bank account (about 6 years ago now), my bank decided that was as good as having BAD credit, so any deposit I make, be it cash or cheque, takes 5-7 business days to clear. And until I make a deposit at least once a month for a period of 6 months, that's how it's going to stay. I could succesfully do this every month for 5 months, but if I miss the 6th month, it's back to square one. With the way my job situation is looking, there's no way I'll be able to do that for quite some time. Pisses me off so much.

Might I suggest simply setting aside an envelope full of Loonies and Twonies along with post-dated $1 and $2 deposit slips, for the first of each of the next six months? Unless they have a minimum for those deposits. I dislike banks. Mine tries to convince me to use my debit card by pressing/opting for "credit." Stores that run credit cards have to pay fees per use, whereas debit cards don't quite work the same way. So of course I tell the bank to screw off and go debit.

I had a bank close my account once without telling me. Despite the fact that I had money in the bank, I han't made a deposit in about 2 months. I never signed anything that said I would. I had to storm in there and demand my balance.
Another time, I tried to cash a check from my Grandma for a few hundred dollars and the bank told me that it would take a few days to clear. I then walked straight up to the ATM in the lobby and the money was shown as being in my account. I withdrew it, and then got fined by the bank for having "insufficient funds".

I have a good story about my bank.
The other day I put some money in my checking account. The apparently shorted me a whole penny in my change... so they mailed me said penny.

Being born in different country to the one I'm in now I get sent British currency (10 pounds) every Birthday from one of my Great Aunts.
I usually don't take it to the bank because they have a $10 conversion fee which takes half of the 10 pounds. So I just send it back to a relative in England when their birthday comes.
Greedy f***s. I noticed I get no such conversion fees when I use paypal to purchase products from overseas.

I admit that there have been times where my wife and I would wind up being a little short of our needed funds to pay our bills. Since we had check protection, we would willingly deal with the associated fines. What really sucked is that the banks would ALWAYS process the checks from largest value to lowest. While they claimed that this was by design in order to ensure that large checks for things like rent, car payments, etc. were taken care of for their clients, but since checks were always covered so long as the balance does not exceed -$500, that means nothing. Instead, what processing the large checks first did was it would wipe out the balance faster, causing all of the smaller checks to bounce when if things were reversed only the biggest check would bounce.
What that meant was rather than paying for a single $30 fine, I would have to pay for a number of fines. Way too often I had 8 checks come through a day or so before payday. Had the largest check been processed last, it would have been the only one to have insufficient funds (resulting in $30 of fines), but instead it was processed first, causing most of the rest to bounce instead (sometimes resulting in over $200 of fines).
Yeah, I almost never write checks for a damned thing anymore.

Banks use basically the same business model as Count Dracula.
