OK, so I am in the market for a new video game system. I'm behind in the times and the newest one I own is a PS2. I mainly want to get one of these for the new Ghostbusters game. I don't want the game for the PS2 or Wii because the graphics are inferior. I'm also interested in Street Fighter IV. So what system does one recommend I get if I had to make a choice? Also, could one explain the whole online thing to me? Does it cost money to go online? Do the systems all have modems built in to them? How does that work? i know virtually nothing about online gaming.

got both a PS3 and Xbox 360, got to recommend PS3. most games are carried on both systems, and out of the exclusives i like PS3's more. it also plays bluray and doesn't break as easily. also, Playstation Network is free while in order to play online with Xbox you need gold level Xbox Live which is $50 a year

I too have both, but since Microsoft Support is pissing me off right now, I have to go with the PS3. Granted, there are some awesome XBOX 360 only titles, but with the PS3 you can play Blu Ray discs. You might want to wait on purchasing either system, because if rumor is to be believed there should be a price drop coming soon.

360 all the way!!! Xbox live is better than PSN, and the exclusives for the 360 interest me alot more.

It's all down to the exclusives. Once the PS3 price drop happens there will only be about a $50 difference once you include X-Box Live (online is not as good on PS3 but it is FREE), so it's really just down to exclusive games at that point. Unless you're thinking of getting a 360-Arcade (which to be honest I would think if you're considering a PS3 then a 360-Arcade is out of the question already).
I went PS3 because we have a satellite connection meaning i'd HAVE to get the wireless adaptor for the 360 (which has no wi-fi) which costs $100, and X-Box Live is $50 a year. At that point it was literally a toss-up between which I liked better as the price for what I needed on the 360 added up to the PS3 price. And since PS3 has no RRoD (no offense to 360 owners, but I love how many of them act like "well just send it back and wait a month, no big deal"...yeah big deal, HUGE DEAL), PS3 all the way.
As for online:
X-Box Live costs $50 a year, but is also LOADED with features such as Leaderboards, voice messages, player searches (for gamers close to your level and player reference). Also the X-Box Live Arcade is rather impressive. It's nothing but downloadable games, but the list is rather large and impressive.
PSN doesn't have these options, but it is FREE! They also have a lineup of downloadable games too but not near as impressive, not even as much as the Wii's Virtual Console (even though PSN is now on a spree of uploading PS1 games, including having Final Fantasy VII up a few weeks ago).
360 also doesn't have Wi-Fi. Like I said before it costs $100 to buy an adaptor to work wi-fi into it. PS3 has Wi-Fi out of the box and ready to go. Otherwise you can just connect a cord to the back and go that way.
As for SFIV, the game itself has been reported to have problems online depending on the connection so expect a few rough patches while playing regardless of what system (personally I prefer Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD, which is on both systems as a downloadable game for $15). I would recommend 360 for that since it'll probably have more players, plus more crappers have a 360 than a PS3 if I'm not mistaken.
The Ghostbusters game is probably the same on both systems, I wouldn't think too much into that. If one is better than the other it's not by much.

PS 3. There is a rumored bundle package that will come out next week. You can get the PS 3 plus MGS 4 and Killzone 2 for $399. So you're basically getting the two games for free. That is probably the best bundle I've seen them put out yet.

We need a stick poll for this topic. We seem to get it about once a week or so Personally, I like the 360 better. As others have said, Blu-ray aside, it comes down to exclusives. PS3's really dont entice me that much (GoW aside). Although the built in wi-fi is a nice selling point on the 360. Plus, as much as it pains me to say this, in the long run, I think the PS3 will be a better system. Its more powerful, plus with the blu-ray discs, they can fit more on a disc.

i cant really add whats already been said. tho i only own a PS3 my main buying points really were, Blu-Ray and free online play. i WILL admit, im not a huge game player (mainly rockband2), but imo for people with a home theatre PS3 is more of a must than a 360

PS3. Got mine in June last year, and I've yet to regret it.
It is the most complete system "out of the box". The only two accessories that you'd really need to get is possibly an additional controller, and if you watch a lot of movies/tv shows, then a blu-ray remote. besides that, pretty much every feature is available right from the get go, which is more than I can say about its counterparts.

360. Xbox Live Arcade is like crack man (safe crack! ) I bought one game at first and in less then 2 years, I have 100. You can support your system just on that but then you have other great titles out there on CD.

360.
The PS3 is an AMAZING system, however with PSN you get what you paid for. Since it is free, it is like the PS2's online in that each game publisher has to make their own servers for the online multiplayer. What this means is eventually you won't be able to play online for that game, because after a few years the publisher will cease to keep the servers up.
On the other hand, with Xbox Live, the servers will stay up until Microsoft decides to stop supporting that version of Xbox Live.
So it is trade off.
As for the games, right now, the 360 easily has the better library, thanks to the year long head start. HOWEVER, the PS3 has the best future lineup. So basically if you get a PS3, you are waiting for the future.

Unless you get the Arcade bundle, that's pretty much all you "need" with the 360, too (except replace "Blu-Ray remote" with "DVD remote"). Unless WiFi is mandatory (personally, I don't have, need, or especially want WiFi, so it's a moot point for me personally). Then you gotta buy an adapter for the 360. MS' is expensive as hell at $100, but there are much cheaper third party alternatives. Also, does the OP have an HDTV? If not, Blu-Ray means jack unless you plan to get an HDTV soon.

Call me a cheapskate, but I just use the controller as a remote for mah PS3. It works fine.

XBOX 360 by a mile.
Live might cost money, but it boils down to less than $5 bucks a month, so it's incredibly worth it. Not paying for Live seems like an excuse for some people to just be cheap, and I never cared for PSN.
I couldn't care less about Blu-Ray, which has it's own problems. I've had both, and I always leaned towards playing my 360 more, until I sold my PS3. I just didn't need it.

The software interface works fine and the functions I'd need a remote most for (pausing, rewinding) are easy enough to do on the controller.

Eh, what I meant was PS3 was ready for pretty much everything. At school, I had to use a wired connection, while at home I have wi-fi, so I didn't need to buy any expensive adapters, where I would have to with any other console. lus, you have to factor in Live into that as well. Right there, the Xbox would be the same price, if not more, than the PS3.

It really depends on the exclusives you want and other little things. I went with PS3 because it had the most exclusives I want and don't care as much about online play. Cost wise, you keep Live long enough and it will balance out.
