Also, if backwards compatibility is a big deal for you, both systems are somewhat lacking.
The 360 can play a sizable collection of Xbox titles (and there's the Xbox Originals downloads from Live), but not every game is compatible. Even some of the ones that are have spotty emulation, like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II.
As for the PS3, it can play just about every single PS1 game well (Final Fantasy VII being one of the major exceptions with bad slowdown). And you can buy PS1 games for download off the PSN Store, including FFVII which runs without any slowdown. But from the 40 GB model on, they completely lack the ability to play PS2 games due to not having the Graphics Synthesizer chip (the PS2's GPU) built in.

I posted a news article a week or so ago that Sony has made a code for the chip that can emulate the PS2 chip. When they will release that noone is for sure, but it'll allow ALL PS3s to play pretty much ALL PS2 games if I am not mistaken. All it would take is a new system update over their network. But some people speculate they need to do some more stuff before this is for real. No official word from Sony but alot of places has confirmed it already.
