Why do so many people have a hard time distinguishing between these 2 practices and lump them in as the same thing?

Sometimes there's not much difference.

how? Vocals are live = vocals are not live. Seems like a HUGE difference to me.

Sometimes the person is singing but there's a backing track to make the person's voice sound fuller and cover mistakes. It's not exactly lip syncing, but pretty damn close. It's still not really what the person sounds like when they sing, there's a similar level of deception going on if we're supposed to think that it's really the person singing.

They're still singing.

Why do so many people have a hard time distinguishing between these 2 practices and lump them in as the same thing? Because both lip syncing and backup tracks detract from the authenticity of *live* performances, any differences between them are negligible to music enthusiasts who loathe phoniness. Both practices are deceptive and fake.

Exactly. Yeah, they're singing, but it's not really what they sound like. It's kind of like how airbrushing the hell out of a picture blurs the line between a photograph and a painting.

Both are cheating. Don't make songs you can't recreate live.
Drums loops and other shit are in the same vain.

I wouldn't say don't make songs like that, but don't do something live if you can't REALLY do it live.

I wouldn't say don't make songs like that, but don't do something live if you can't REALLY do it live. That would pretty much take care of a lot of musical careers these days anyway.

I wouldn't complain. A little weeding out could do mainstream music a lot of good if you ask me.
