He started off with Team Angel or World's Greatest Team Team, and the team was extremely hot. I think their team helped set the bar again for tag team wrestling at the time. Then, Shelton gets moved over to Raw in '04, and he is extremely over as a babyface. The way Shelton was going on Raw, it appeared as they were pushing him up to be the next top babyface in the company. Then, they turned him heel with the mama's boy gimmick. The mama's boy gimmick had good comic effect, with no longevity. Then, they repacked him with Haas, and they were a jobbing tag team. Now he has the "ripoff Natural Butch Reed" gimmick, which is as flounding as the Ringmaster. The only thing noteable Benjamin does these days, is when they bring him out once a year for Money In the Back. So, how did a guy with some must potential in the company, sink so low before he peaked ? Also, do you think he will ever regain the momentum he had in 2004 ?

I heard he is happy with just jobbing and has no desire to to be a "main eventer". I think thats the real reason why he isn't pushed to main event status.

I remember when he had a very brief feud with Randy Orton for the IC title, I thought they were going to have the next great rivalry that would last into the main event.
Unfortunately, it hasn't happened.

I think this is kind of ignoring things for the sake of a story. He had a respectably long reign as US champion and the Gold Standard gimmick has arguably been the best he's been pushed since his days of sneaking wins over Triple H.
Fact is, sometimes guys get lost in the shuffle. It's not always just about merit. Maybe he needs to push for himself more, since it can be the squeeky wheel that gets the grease.

I don't know if he was happy jobbing, but I remember hearing for a long time that he wasn't making an effort to advance. While rarely does an idea actually get used Vince is apparently really drawn to people who are willing to come up to him and say "Hey, what if we tried (whatever) with my character??" and really try to sell themselves to Vince and other writers that THEY should be the one that gets pushed. I think it's HBK who tells the story of walking into Vince's office one day and saying "Vince, what do I have to do to show you I should get a push?" and Vince looked at him for a second and said "You just did it." Because when it comes down to it, if you don't think you deserve the push why should he?

Because when it comes down to it, if you don't think you deserve the push why should he? It's possible. I know that guys are almost certainly intimidated, but it's like asking a girl out. Will she say yes? Maybe, but the odds aren't certain. Still, if you don't ask, you can't expect her to do it for you. Some guys have friends who will go to bat for them, like Hogan trying to ensure in the past that Brutus had a job, but beyond that, most guys are on their own. If you don't step up to the plate for yourself, no one likely will, which is what Lance Storm has said was Val Venis's problem. That being said, it's not good to keep shooting stupid ideas to them, although that was the least of Juvi's problems.

But even little things to show you care, like take John Morrison for example. He just turned face and if he were to goto Vince or Hayes and say "Hey, I think my music was great for a heel, but I'd like to try out something that's got a really good hook at the beginning to really pop the crowd! Something that really stands out when you hear it" It's not so much the idea, as it is showing that you care and are really trying.

One could make a strong argument that sort of initiative is a huge reason Mick Foley succeeded in WWF/WWE. He talked Vince out of a bad gimmick idea, and rather than cursing the darkness, lit a candle, and a bright one at that.

Maybe he's getting promo and acting lessons. *shrug* I think he was really improving with his promos. It probably helped that he had found a good theme in the gold schtick.

What's wrong with being a midcarder?
If everyone is pushed to the potential that the IWC sees in him, everyone - Shelton, Punk, Haas, Kenny Dykstra, etc. - would be either a multi-time or super-long-reignine WWE/World champion, and that would be the one thing that "de-values" the belts most of all.
I think Shelton Benjamin as a midcarder who can definitely hang with the big guns is all he needs to be. Squashes aren't necessary, but neither is Shelton beating everyone in his path. He fits perfectly at the IC/U.S. championship level.

Unfortunately, it hasn't happened. He got injured not long after Bad Blood 2004 thats probably why and when he returned Randy had turned face and wasnt IC champ
