There must have been. I don't know to what extent though, since I was only 13/14 and still not too clued up on 'insider' knowledge.
Reading the archives of sites like the Oratory you could tell that was essentially a very IWC oriented site in the days of dial-up Internet. There was a lot of love for Jericho as well as Guerrero, Benoit and Malenko and general WCW bashing (in its final year or so).

That would've been like Morrison doing it now, I guess.

I remember the IWC loving Jericho as Undisputed Champion. I even remember some NEWZ (sorry, but you forum members have made that phrase into a monster) about Larry Zbyzsko having HEATZ (again, sorry) about Jericho calling himself the 'Living Legend.' I do recall some complaining about the Stephanie/dog/dog crap storyline where Jericho played second fiddle to the Trips/Steph saga.

I remember marking so hard that I couldn't sit down for like ten minutes after it ended. I'd been a loyal Jerichoholic since 1997 so seeing him win the big one was amazing. I think I posted on some forum at the time, and most people were ecstatic.

Yes and yes I was around. I believe that was during the time when the Unofficial Wrestlecrap Delphi Forum had closed down and a lot of crappers were using another Wrestlecrap Forum known as Whacked Out World of Wrestling. People were surprised to say the least the night it happened, but it wasn't too long before him jobbing it to Triple H was a given.

I remember a lot of bitching about the Steph/Hunter/Jericho stuff and the aforementioned Larry Zbyzsko story (even something about him suing Jericho and WWE)but, that's about it.

I remember calling that. My friend and I both said Jericho was winning, because it was just what made the most sense.
And the Zbysko story was true, if I'm not mistaken he ended up sending a cease and desist letter due to him apparently owning the trademark for the "Living Legend" nickname as it pertains to wrestling.

Damn, some of you guys make me feel old. LOL
Anyway, I was around then (I've been part of the "IWC" since 1998). And although alot of people were happy when he became Undisputed champion, most people were cynical about it. And then nobody was happy when HHH made him look like a little bitch.
Actually, I think alot of the IWC's love for Jericho had started to fade a little by that point, in favor of Angle and Benoit.
And Benoit winning the World Title made a much bigger impact among the IWC than Jericho winning the title.

I was a mark back then and I was a little pissed. But looking back, I'm happy he won.

I remember the IWC back then, and it was still pretty badly disgusted from the horribly booked Invasion angle. At the time this match happened, everyone was especially sick of both Rock and Austin, and Jericho represented a breath of fresh air.
Personally I didn't buy him as a legit heel, and knew he was going to be fed to a returning HHH the month after he won the belts. Think of Randy Orton's first reign, but a few months longer.
