...That the WWE is based out of the same state as them?
I just got to thinking about this while watching "Sportcenter", as their 50 States in 50 Days comes from Connecticut. They even mentioned the WWE in passing, and we know that ESPN's never really looked favorably at pro wrestling.

I know ESPN hasn't but Sportscenter has lots of times.I remember one night a few years back before the show they aired a clip of several wrestlers doing interviews one who I think was Flair.

Several SportsCenter and ESPNEWS anchors have referenced wrestling quotes as well. I've heard "To be the man, whooo! you gotta beat the man" and "Oooooohh yeeaahhh!!" more than a few times.

If you remember, the Expos played half their home games in San Juan, Puerto Rico. J.W. Stewart (I think)- "Tony Batista up for the (Ex)Spos' in the top of the 3rd and hits one towards Puerto Rico...that's not GOOD" For some reason that always made me laugh ;D

According to the Torch, a fan heard an ESPN announcer say "I spit in the face of people who don't want to be cool" during a SportsCenter telecast (probably a baseball highlight).
As for ESPN itself, they show cheerleading, "ESPN Hollywood" (pretty much Entertainment Tonight except with ESPN in the title), a bunch of meaningless game shows with athletes involved, and they've given an entire show to Stephen A. Smith (someone who makes me appreciate Stephanie McMahon's voice - pre growth hormone). I don't see why ESPN would be ashamed of wrestling itself. Of the current state of wrestling? Sure, hell, I'm embarrased of the WWE right now! But wrestling as a whole? I'm sure they were more lenient during the Attitude Era.

Why would this bother ESPN in the least bit?

Yeah, ESPN doesn't care that the WWE is in the same state. In fact, the WWE and ESPN have worked together before. There was a "This Is Sportscenter" ad campaign in the late 90s which featured a whole bunch of WWE guys who wanted ESPN to show wrestling highlights. I think the Undertaker and King Kong Bundy were intimidating Craig Kilborn who was still there at the time in one of the scenes while Kilborn's coming up with some lame excuse that he doesn't pick the highlights.

Steve Austin was on a This is Sportscenter commercial just 2 years ago. He was sitting in the break room looking depressed when Dan Patrick whacked him in the back with a steel chair. "Thanks, Dan. I feel alot better." I also listen the the Dan Patrick show on ESPN radio every day. Every day I hear, "This is Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle, and you're listening to the Dan Patrick show on ESPN radio."

ESPN used to show wrestling back in the 80's AWA and whatever that company was that the Von Erichs ran(WCCW?). I guess as they got bigger they "outgrew" wrestling, although they obviously haven't outgrown spelling-bee, cheerleading, or board-breaking yet.
I still don't see why ESPN hasn't come around to mixed-martial-arts yet. They are letting Spike and FSN get a leg-up that they'll regret.

Here in Canada TSN which is partially owend by ESPN Talk about wrestling a bit more because TSN shows RAW. At the half way mark of Raw they have a update on What is coming up after Raw and there stupid coments on what just happened on Raw. I TSN like wrestling more than ESPN because it is one of thier highest rated programs.

I have the "This is Sportscenter" commercial featuring HBK, Diesel, Bundy, Undertaker, and Paul Bearer. You can get it on any p2p sharing program like Ares, Limewire, etc.

I really like Stephen A. Smiths show. He is the only one on the whole channel with the testicular fortitude to say what he is actually thinking Jim Rome does too like him or hate him.

But whatever....
