Alright, so I kinda dabble in comics but I don't keep track with them like I used to. Anyways, I just got done reading an article on The AV Club about 21 Artists that changed the comic business and one of them was Greg Land. So here's what his entry entailed: So, I decided to look for a few examples of this guy's work to check it out. While some of the characters expressions are obviously taken from porn, that's not what caught my eye. What I did notice was that a number of the superhero poses looked like familiar pictures as well. *Language warnings* Exhibit A - Dead center of the animated gif, Kurt Angle, anyone? Exhibit B - Obviously Batista, even down to the face. Exhibit C - So, Triple H really is Thor! Exhibit D - Triple H once again...but not Thor? Just a simple search from a non-comic book nerd was able to uncover these. So have any of you eagle-eyed comic book nerds able to spot any other ripoffs, wrestling or not?

Land is full of them, which is a shame, a SHAME, because if you look at his older, non-photo-realistic work, he's a very talented artist. I'm out of the comics loop now, but back a few years ago every issue of Ultimate Fantastic Four had people posting images from magazines and stuff they were 'referenced' from. He's also been accused (not proven, as far as I know) by other Crossgen artists of just cutting out pictures and tracing them, or even arranging them and having other artist do it for him. However, like I said, these are just accusations that I cannot prove as truth, but looking over his work for the long term its not completely unfathomable. I loved him when he was on Sojourn, and bought a piece or original art when I met him, but as time wore on his stuff just got stiffer and stiffer to the point that realism made all his once great work look faker then ever before.

Some of his stuff truly looks like he did nothing but run an existing picture through a photoshop filter in order to turn it into linework that he then went over. There are a couple of instances where his work CLEARLY came from hardcore porn, and he didn't even bother to change the facial expression. It's sad.

Reading and seeing these things just makes me appreciate the artists who actually do their own work even more. I could never really get into Land (Mike Deodato Jr is walking the line with his Tommy Lee Jones Goblin) because it was so obvious he was just looking at other things and re-creating them (I didn't know about the out-and-out tracing allegations).
If he wants to go that route, good for him and the people who pay him. I'll take a Chris Bachalo funny-book any day of the week.

PS - I found THIS, an ongoing thread from a comic forum with a whole ton of comparisons. I'm only at like page 14 so far. I'd continue but I gotta get to bed.

For all the disinterest I currently have in Greg's work, I have to say that in all fairness he is a decent guy in real life (which does matter to me quite a bit) with a sense of humour and did this for me:

I think it's gotten to the point where people see ones that aren't even there, and are just conditioned to think they see some celebrity because of Land's reputation.

Perhaps, but a lot of the ones that have been found are beyond argument. You can literally overlay his picture over the original and it's an exact match.

I wonder if anyone has ever made WWE legal shark Jerry McDevvit aware of Land purloining the likeness of WWE talent without paying royalties?
I wonder what would happen if someone DID.....

I'm not saying he hasn't done any of this. I've seen all these pictures and gifs before.

But JG Jones merely, "casts" his comics, like he drew tommy lee jones, eminem, and hall berry into wanted, but he wasn't tracing publicity stills of them, which seems to be what land does now.
What about Adam Hughes? Some of his cheescake pictures seem like old playboy models, but it the copying as extreme?

Hughes I don't know, but he's another guy who's older stuff is really amazing and overlooked by his current style. And he does a lot of sketches at cons that seem to have a good quality.

Adam Hughes doesn't swipe. He does sometimes use models for his work (that he actually hires) but it's all his stuff. He does sometimes draw in certain styles to evoke a certain era (he may do a Norman Rockwell type of cover for example). This Greg Land thing is nothing new - tons of artists do this. I've noticed this since the early 90s. Guys are ripping off poses from porn, from other comic artists, sometimes even "ripping off" themselves! Bob Kane ripped off Todd McFarlane while doing work for the 89 Batman movie. There was an artist in the 80s (Rich Buckler)who ripped off Archie comics of all things. Edit: JD - how can you not know who Adam Hughes is???

Bob Kane ripped off Todd McFarlane while doing work for the 89 Batman movie. Bob Kane ripped off EVERYONE. The famous cover to Detective 27 was swiped from an issue of Flash Gordon, which featured a character called "Batman". No lie. Also, most of his art in the early days was traced, like so: A book from the early 1930's called "Gang Busters": Detective 27: Gang Busters: Detective 27: Now, here's Kane swiping from an old Tarzan strip: Then after he was done swiping art, he started hiring ghost artists and then taking the credit for drawing the pictures. There's a documentary on some Batman DVD where he claims that he kept changing his art style to fit the times. The thing is, you can't just completely change your style. Everyone's art has their signature details. Combine this with the fact that his art would have had to change styles a ridiculous number of times if his claims were true. Sorry for the huge rant, I'm just sick and tired of Bob Kane getting so much credit for being the "creator" of Batman. The only reason Batman exists as he does today is due to men like Bill Finger and Dick Sprang, who actually created the entire Batman universe while Kane spent his entire life stealing the credit.
