I knew he had let other artists do work and then sign his name to it - I but I never knew his swipes were this outrageously bad. Wow. Good post.
There's a funny side story to the Bob Kane/Todd McFarlane situation. Todd went to a comic-con with his wife and he met with Gil Kane and was all chummy and happy to talk to him. After they left, his wife (Todd's) was mad at him. He asked her why, and she said because he was so nice to Kane. He had to tell her it was a different Kane that stole his work.
I happened to have read Kane's bio years ago - he spent a lot of time describing how he created Bruce Wayne in his image - they were both "suave" and "handsome". I could barely read the book - it was loaded with so much self-worship.
The only thing I disagree with you on is that you can completely change your art style..it has happened but in Bob Kane's case I don't believe it for a second.
Cool post dude.

Bob Kane ripped off Todd McFarlane while doing work for the 89 Batman movie. Bob Kane ripped off EVERYONE. The famous cover to Detective 27 Sorry for the huge rant, I'm just sick and tired of Bob Kane getting so much credit for being the "creator" of Batman. The only reason Batman exists as he does today is due to men like Bill Finger and Dick Sprang, who actually created the entire Batman universe while Kane spent his entire life stealing the credit. Yeah Bill Finger really got the shaft when he was responsible for MOST of the Batman mythos that people know.

I just looked up a lot of the Greg Land stuff, and I have to say I'm completely flabbergasted at this guy.
Tracing and using photographs isn't new - Norman Rockwell did it, Drew Struzan did it, etc. It's the unbelievable lack of common sense this guy has in regard to doing what he does. What a total hack.

Yeah, it really does make me sick that Bob Kane always gets the "Created by" credit in all Batman-related stories when it was Bill Finger who did all the heavy lifting. Unfortunately there's very little that can be done to change it at this point.

This Greg Land thing is nothing new - tons of artists do this. I've noticed this since the early 90s. Guys are ripping off poses from porn, from other comic artists, sometimes even "ripping off" themselves! The allegations with Land go much further than "ripping of poses". Most artists use references of some sort. Some use preexisting pictures, while others take their own. That's a very common thing and always has been. With Land, there have been allegations that he's not even DRAWING the pictures. That he does nothing more than take the photo/screencap, run it through some photoshop filters, then go back over it with a minimal amount of linework to make it look like "original" art.

Seems weird when Land does women poses for Uncanny X-Men... And when he did the Deadpool: Games of Death cover. Look real different.

You can always tell when he's drawn something by hand. It looks completely different. And, as has been said, it's a shame. He's a perfectly good artist.

Kane was a horror. I believe it was Neal Adams who finally said "No chance" when Kane tried to put his name on the art.

Like using two different models for the same character and not altering them much, therefore making the characters look like different people within the same issue. Or, vice versa, using the same pose for two different characters within the same issue. PS - Not to threadjack, but Bill Finger and Dick Sprang are two awesome names.

Since he's not actually drawing the characters, there is no continuity to their look. In one panel, Emma Frost will have a thin, angular face, and in another she will have a rounded, pouty face.

the other thing about Land I dislike is how everything he does looks overly posed and doesn't look like movement. characters in Greg Land works don't move the way they should be as suggeted by the plot, and they always make f***ing weird facial expressions that don't match up with the emotion they're supposed to feel.
also, X-23 and Pixie are teenagers. why do they look like they're in their 30s?

I would think the reason he's still employed is that he probably gets the stuff done on time. If he was consistently late, I'm sure he'd be long gone.
I know a lot of artists sometimes do character sheets that have all kinds of views of who they are drawing so they can reference them when needed. It's obvious from what little I've seen that this guy isn't doing that.
Sad thing is, he probably could draw all of this if he wanted to - it just takes time. That's the problem with realistic looking art..it takes a lot of time. If he just drew the stuff instead of spending forever online looking for images that "kind of, sort of" fit he'd probably be pretty damn good.
What's happening is that this is totally ruining his reputation.

You mean...people steal ideas and concepts from other people to lessen the amount of work they actually have to do?
Heavens to Murgatroyd!
