Sports based movies are legion, but which ones make for the best movies or which ones actually have the best movies based on them?

One man stand, one man fall is a concept that has great dramatic potential. This means my vote is for, of course, boxing.

I'll say Boxing. Rocky, Raging Bull, The Hurricane, Million Dollar Baby, and Cinderella Man to name a few.

Not football, thats for sure. I hate all the idiotic "super" hits that happen on every play with people spinning and annoying rock music being played. Totally overdone.

I think Baseball makes great movies. It's America's past time and with well written dialogue and casting, the team interaction can be great.
Boxing works really well, as "fighting" relates well as do character studies and development.
I'm a bit surprised there aren't that many good/great football movies as you can work in the fighting and teamwork stuff. Then again, casting is an issue I guess.

Football (soccer) makes for terrible films as it just can`t be faked without looking, well, fake. I`ve yet to see football on film where it doesn`t just look like the players are letting the opposition run past them on purpose.
Edit* I voted golf for the reason that all you need to do is show a guy swinging and then see the ball land so it could be faked. Baseball could be faked similarly I suppose.
Sports where there is direct interaction between players will be harder than sports where players are separated.

You can say the same thing abou boxing, especially the Rocky films. The fighters constantly take full-on blows to the head and never, ever defend themselves.

I always enjoy American Football films even though I've never watched the actual sport.

What? Nobody here has ever seen "Slap Shot"? Man. I think "Miracle" is a better option. There's too many choices to vote as each sport has had some great movie except auto racing (with the sole exception of the movie Grand Prix).

Boxing has the best lineage in terms of success with awards, but a baseball movie done right can be just so damned good.
I agree that football produces the worst. Contrary to what the movies would lead you to believe, not every play is ended with a bone-crushing tackle and not every game is ended on a miraculous hail-mary.

I can't pick a winner, but they usually run from very good, to very bad, with no in-between.
