Love the show. Angel too.
I agree Buffy peaked during seasons 2 and 3. The stories went a bit downhill after the gang graduated high school, but it was still a great show.
I thought season 6 was the weakest, although it did have great episodes in Once More With Feeling and Tabula Rasa, as well as a strong end (yellow crayon speech has me busting out a hanky every time).
I hated season 4 when it was first airing, mainly due to the whole Initiative saga and the Riley/Buffy relationship. Watching it now though, I find season 4 has many strong stand alone episodes (Hush, Fear Itself, Restless, This Year's Girl/Who Are You, etc, etc), but the season-arching story is still weak.
Oh, and the Mayor owns your soul.

I'd never seen this show until I got to college where a friend let me borrow seasons 1-6. I watched every episode in a matter of days. I'm a huge Spike fan until he becomes so popular to the fans that they made him a good guy. When that happened it was similar to what happened in DBZ to Vegeta....except Vegeta still got to be kickass. Spike did not.
That said, favorite episode are easily Once More, With Feeling (Spike and Giles sing....and it rules!) and Restless (featuring The Cheese Man!).
Also, any fan of the series should watch Angel. They're very similar and both awesome, and Spike gets to remain a badass.

Oh yes I agree the Buffy relationship really kind of made Spike weak...but if I was you I would pick up season 5 of Angel when Spike joins the cast. When they take away Buffy from Spike and Cordy from Angel and those two go at it, it is like magic.

They were able to repair a lot of the damage that had been done to him on Buffy. He became a badass again, and almost had evil Spike's personality, just hurting bad guys instead of good guys.

Anyone like the episode were Xander gets the love spell going and Ms. Calender is all over him. DAMN hot. Also like the one with the cowboy brothers. She kills the thing under the school and jumps out with a pickaxe and black blood all over. "OK we're good" or something like that he says and run offs.

I often wonder if Spike would have been better off being developed into a vigilante of sorts who killed demons/vampires but still hated the Scoobies. Basically positioning him as the anti-hero rival to Buffy rather than the stalker with a crush/lover he turned into.
Hindsight's 20/20 I guess.

Exactly! For anyone who is confused about this, let me show you: AND The second one is literally Spike's first appearance in Angel. And knightrider, while I don't own it, I have seen every episode of Angel. Damn right Spike gets to be awesome!Spike again.

I dipped in and out of the show when it was actually on TV. I liked it but I usually find it hard to get into a show like this if I didn't start watching from the beginning.
A few years ago I got the first season (on VHS!) and loved it but lack of money meant I couldn't buy any more of the series. Plus every time I saw it on TV it was the newer episodes which I didn't like as much because of the monsters and the demons which I thought were lame and unrealistic (ironic for a show about vampires I know). The thing was, the first season actually seemed like these things could be happening (even Sid the puppet). In the later episodes when I saw all these red headed demons walking round the streets of Sunnydale it was like "huh? This couldn't happen!". I also disliked the character of Dawn...
Anyway, a few months back I found my old VHS machine so popped in Buffy and ended up watching the whole series within a weekend, before buying season 2 & 3. So far, I love it. There have been some naff episodes here and there but (seasons 1-3 at least) are well written, well thought out and well acted (for the most part). In season 2 and the 3 the monsters did get less and less realistic but it worked because they were gradually edged into the show rather than just thrown in. There have been some really cool villains like Spike & Drusilla, Angel, the Mayor, Ted, Der Kindestod, Anyanka as well as some good episodes like Halloween, Suprise, Innocence, Phases, Passion, Band Candy, The Wish, Amends, The Zeppo and Doppelgangland.
SPOILER ALERT Character wise, I think all the scoobies are great. I will say Xander annoys me when the group argues because it seems forced, like when he couldn't understand Buffy needing to leave at the end of season 2. In Dead Man's Party he just came off as a huge jerk. I loved Jenny Calender (and if she'd been in it longer I could have easily called her my favourite character). Not only was she gorgeous. like most of the cast, but she was well developed, funny and knowledgable so she fit in the group perfectly. I think it was probably a good idea that she was killed off as it spurred the group on in their pursuit of Angel. The chase scene in Passion was terrifying and the scene were Giles sees her dead lying on his bed (set out by Angel) is heartbreaking. Passion is probably one of my favourite episodes. When Angel is bad he is good. When Angel is good he is boring and badly acted. MY GOD David Boreanaz is often painful to watch. It's weird that when he becomes evil, he actually comes off as very talented. Loved Dru and Spike so much that I don't want to see Spike come back in the later seasons because I don't think I could cope seeing him without Dru (it was bad enough in Lovers Walk). I actually really liked the character of Kendra. Sure her accent was a bit wobbly, but the team of her and Buffy was pretty cool to see and she was the perfect opposite of Buffy. I thought her death was more of a case of "eh, we can't be bothered trying to salvage this character; let's kill her off and bring in another new slayer!". Which brings me to Faith. I cannot make up my mind whether I like or dislike Faith. So that's all I'll say.
I like getting into shows like this, years after they've finished, because it means I can watch them all whenever I want, and I can buy them for cheaper because Buffy is on sale everywhere!
