What is the general consensus on the "Montreal Incident"? Did Bret deserved to be screwed the way he was, or was Shawn just an arrogant a**hole?
I side with Bret; he is the man; and my homeland of Canada owns every other nation as well.

I DO think Bret was wronged, however I think Shawn Michaels (who I've never been a fan of) was just doing his job. Vince asked him to do it, he did it, end of story. It's not Shawn's fault. It's Vince's. I think the "Lost My Smile" incident makes Shawn Michaels an "arrogant a**hole" way more than Montreal does.

I'll side with Bret now and forever. I find it hypocritical that the same people who defend Austin and Hogan throwing tantrums and walking out give Bret shit about wanting to go out on top in Canada and then drop the belt the next night. The WWF owed it to Bret.
And don't give me that crap that Bret probably would've tried to go to WCW with the belt, instead of dropping it to HBK the next night. He had more class than that.

Shawn cause Bret was crazy to think Vince would let him leave as champion. I will say Vince should have been up front about it instead of screwing him.

To me, Bret carried the WWE through a very rough period, and for them to just totally sh*t on him like that...it's just so wrong.
And I hope Michaels burns in Hell for his transgressions..

But then again, Shawn will NEVER go to Hell, he is best pals with Jesus. I always found his little prayer entrance to be quite pretentious.

I vote Bret. Things should have ended different. But what I don't get is why Bret just didn't drop the title a little earlier.

The more I think about it... Shawn, this is pro-wrestling, you almost always go out on your back. Vince had to protect his title, even if Bret handed over the belt the next night, don't think Bischof wouldn't have had a field day with it, saying he had the real WWF champ and what not. Bret shoulda just done the job when he was told to.

I side with Bret. Bret wasn't going to leave as Champion. He didn't want to screw over the WWE like that because of what they did for him, and what he did for the WWE. Bret also had 30 days creative control, and wanted to lose it in the United States(he wanted to lose it at a house show in the states, but I think that was changed to the Raw after the Raw after Survivor Series.
Shawn did his job I guess. It was Vince who was responsible. He screwed Bret. And Earl Hebner, who swore on his kids' lives apparently. Thanks Dad, lol.

Ah bollocks; Bret never deserved to lose to the title in our humble land of Canada after giving so MUCH to the WWE.
I hope Hart comes out and decks Michaels as hard as he did McMahon. That would rule; just totally knock his silly a** out.

I think they were both right. Shawn and Bret had legitimate beef so no one can say that it was wrong that he didn't clue Bret in. I wouldn't tell someone I disliked they were going to get f***ed over.
Bret was right in the sense that it was agreed upon how it was going to end. His trust was betrayed.
Hebner and McMahon are the real assh*les. Hebner swore on his children's life, to a very good friend, that he would allow nothing to happen. He's a piece of trash who deserved to leave the business the way he did, in shame.
McMahon, although only looking out for the good of his business, should have known that the 15 year friendship and business relationship he shared with Bret wouldn't allow Bret to go to WCW with his title. Vince knew better, he just couldn't afford to be wrong. It only proved that he would f*** over his own mother if it meant he'd keep a buck in his pocket.
Vince is respectable for his accomplishments, but not as a person. In my opinion, the man is far too intelligent and successful to be the scumbag that he is.

I have always thought that Shawn Michaels was highly overrated to begin with.

bret hart was in the wrong, so was vince. it should have been handled differently. Michaels just did his job.
wrestling wise, michaels is far from being overrated. hes probably in the top 3 greatest all around wrestlers WWE has had.

Bret screwed Bret.
Hart should have did the job. That's the way the business works. The fact that Michaels would forfeit the belt when he didn't want to job is irrelevant. Bret Hart should have been the bigger man and did the right thing.
