Wow, goin' a little crazy with the lists these days, eh? Ah well. I got bored, so I decided I'd share with you my current top ten list. Buckle in.
10. Shane Storm vs. Icarus - Young Lion's Cup Finals, YLC III, Night 3:
According to Larry Sweeney, this is his personal favorite CHIKARA match. Usually, Shane Storm doesn't inspire too many people to say "hey, did you see Shane's match last night? AWESOME!" But due to just enough Technico Fighting Spirit, and the entire rudo and technico locker rooms emptying to stand in their men's corners, you wind up with pretty much the best match Storm's ever had.
Fun Fact: Shane Storm is one of the only two YLC winners (the other being Hallowicked) to hold their respective cups all the way through to the next tournament.
9. Seventeen Tag Team Gauntlet Match - King of Trios 2007, Night 3:
No, I'm not going to name everyone whom appeared in the match. I will say that its probably one of CHIKARA's most impressive examples of cramming every possible highspot ever into one, hour long match (Cibernetico's not included). You have to mark for a match that includes Cheech and Cloudy, Arrogance, the return of SnS Int'l, and AND Robbie Ellis. You just have to.
8. KUDO and MIKAMI vs. MIYAWAKI and Yoshiaki Yago - Tag World Grand Prix 2006, Night 1:
Maybe my favorite "foreign attraction" match that CHIKARA's ever had. Its also the only match that has made my best friend's girlfriend sit down and shut up to watch wrestling. Also had a good mish-mash of styles in KUDO's and Yago's martial arts, MIKAMI's high-flying, and MIYAWAKI's bad ass brawling. Just everything about the match was good. Period.
7. Cheech and Cloudy vs. The Olsen Twins - Cibernetico and Robin:
You know the one. The match where the Olsens came into their own and grew up as a tag team. The one where Cheech and Cloudy cemented their status as a team that can have a good match with anyone. The one where HOLY POOP DID YOU SEE COLIN DIVING DDT CHEECH ON THE OUTSIDE?!?!?!?!
6. Jigsaw vs. Icarus - Lucha de Aspuesta, the Crushing Weight of Mainstream Ignorance:
I've always thought that feuds that create other feuds with other wrestlers involved were the best kinds of feuds, which is something that CHIKARA is also quite good at doing. One of my favorite "side-feuds" would be Jigsaw/Icarus, due to the good work they did with eachother. Add the Hair vs. Mask stips, and we've got us some good cookin' for a big face off.
Fun Fact: The only match in CHIKARA history in which the match could be won via pinfall, submission, and "murder" (if a fan in the audience is to be believed).
5. Necro Butcher vs. Yoshiaki Yago - Tag World Grand Prix 2006, Night 3:
PUNCH PUNCH PUNCH PUNCH KICK KICK PUNCH SUPLEX PUNCH KICK HOOOOOOOOOOOOLY CRAP what a match.
4. Mike Quackenbush vs. Chris Hero - Anniversario?:
Its the big one. The one match that had been built to for two years straight. Hero had made the mistake of finally giving Quack the chance to set him straight after all the wrongdoings. And while I felt that it was something of a let down, it doesn't change the fact that the ending was very satisfying. Vengeance was Quack's, but for Hero, his year was just beginning...
3. Fire Ant vs. Vin Gerard - Young Lion's Cup Finals, YLC VI, Night 3:
What is it with me and tournaments? I dunno. Ah well.
But truly, when anyone who's seen the match tells you about how FRIGGING GREAT it was, for the love of God, listen to them. They know what they're talking about.
2. Claudio Castagnoli vs. Mike Quackenbush - Negative Balance:
I'm very glad to have this on DVD. These two always put on something worth watching whenever they get into the ring, and this might actually be their best example of that. The transitions were on spot, the commentary was funny, and you know what? This is the first CHIKARA match I've ever seen. Sentimental value or not, there's no denying that this match was great.
1. Chris Hero vs. Claudio Castagnoli - Rey de Voladores:
What's better than Claudio battling Quack? And better than Hero battling Quack? When the Kings get together and battle with eachother. The year 2007 was a year for the Kings to really beat the snot out of eachother it seemed, but nobody booked them better than CHIKARA, and this is probably the best match they've had. Period. Not just in the series, but the best match they've had with eachother. Best match the Kings had with eachother, best match in CHIKARA history. So sayeth I, anyhow.
So, hope you enjoyed my dumb list.
