I vaguely remember this happening in WCW. Jim Duggan would tape his hand or something and it would allow him to knock out people with a single blow. One time he even declared that the tape would allow him to defeat Hollywood Hogan.
What the hell was all that about? Am I missing an obvious detail that has this make sense?

They did a video on Duggan's forefathers and how he came from a long line of taped fist champions and so he just started using it to beat his foes. Of course against guys like The Giant, it didn't work all that well though.

He wouldn't just tape his fist, that wouldn't be Duggan enough. Nope, he grabbed one end, flinged it around his head where it would sloppily cover his fist, then BLAMMO! Deck the guy right in the head without bothering to tear the roll off. The whole thing looked idiotic even for Hacksaw.

I remember he fought DDP in a "Taped Fists Match" at Bash At The Beach once. Man, that whole angle was stupid.

Looking back, it was stupid, but in a funny way. I remember Bobby Heenan once mentioned that his dad was a police chief and was able to hold 6 donuts and an eclair in each hand since his hands were so huge, or something to that effect. But in all seriousness, if you tape your fists correctly, you can actually make them rock hard due to the pressure being exerted and focused.

The insane part of this whole ordeal was he'd do this right in front of the referee. Grab the tape out of his trunks (eww), sloppily wrap his hand a couple of times and BLAM! Referee just stands there like a dope and allows it to happen.
I might be a mark, but I do know that's considered an "international object" as they'd say in WCW.
Didn't he win the TV or US title doing this? Absurd.

I found it appropriate that Duggan would keep the roll of tape attached sometimes.
Aren't wrestling fans always criticizing him for being a sloppy brute?

Say what you will about the taped fist silliness in WCW, but for him to be back in the ring like that after his surgery is pretty impressive.
