Do you remember Rikishi's gimmick as The Sultan. I was going through Wikipedia recently and read about the gimmick. I remember the gimmick and it was horrible. Do you have any memories of The Sultan?

I recall that the alliance between Backlund and Iron Shiek being pushed as unpresidented and the damndest thing to happen in the sport considering the hated past these two had had between each other. And of course nobody cared b/c your average fan back then got into wrestling right around the Hulkamania era. Anything pre-Hogan was completely alien to fans like myself. The Backlund/Shiek alliance was supposed to be fail proof and yet it failed miserably.

The Sultan face someone else in a squash match was actually the first match I ever saw live on WWF RAW. It was early 1997 so I was like 9 at the time and I only watched WCW at the time since it was the big thing around then.
I remember one of the first Nitros I ever watched was when Kevin Nash and Scott Hall attacked wrestlers in the backstage and Nash used Rey Mysterio as a dart against the TV truck.

Wasn't the Sultan wrestling the Rock at Wrestlemania XIII when Rock was still Rocky Maivia? And if I'm not mistaken, Rock was the IC champ at the time.

In a shoot interview, Rikishi said that he really liked it and felt that Vince killed it off when it could have been much bigger.

With the right buildup, the Sultan could have at least main-evented an In Your House against HBK, Bret or Taker in a WWF title match. You can blame the Rock for the gimmick failing (or rather the way the Rock was booked). The WM13 match between Rocky Maivia and the Sultan should have been about establishing Sultan as a monster and potential challenger to the WWF title -- the same prestigious championship that the Sheik and Backlund had held. To that end, Sultan should have either won the IC title in a squash or gotten DQ'ed for going too far in his beatdown. Instead, he lost clean (via a schoolboy, no less) against a guy who was widely considered a joke as IC champ. Any shot at credibility for the Sultan died right there.

I agree I liked the gimmick. I think a modern day Sultan character done exactly the same way would easily get over in today's mediocre WWE product. I mean we are talking about the same company where Umaga got over and his gimmick would be considered completely 80s.

I remember 3 things:
1: I was kinda scared of him. 2: I thought it was weird that a low carder like him had 2 managers 3: He was the last one out in the epic once a year 20 man battle royal on Shotgun Saturday Night which there were only 2 of gave the winner a shot at the IC belt. Patriot won the first, Rock won the 2nd and in my opinion was the catalyst to his rise to stardom

I remember him being fed to Tom Brandi to build him up for that epic "Marc Mero wrecks the Salvatore Sincere gimmick" storyline. Whoo!

Actually, the Sultan was just kind of thrown into that match at the last minute. They originally wanted to do Rocky vs. Mero for the IC Title, with the latter turning heel. But Mero got injured a few weeks before the show, and Sultan was the only guy not booked on the card who might be somewhat of a serious threat.

Even so, WM13 was their chance to "make" the Sultan and take the character someplace huge, and instead it became the "Please, Will You People Just Accept Rocky Maivia?" Show.
