Former World Wrestling Entertainment star Bobby Lashley will make his mixed martial arts debut for the Mixed Fighting Alliance on Saturday at AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami.
''Actually, I was training in MMA before I went to WWE,'' Lashley said in a phone interview. ``I had wrestled [as an amateur] for 18 years, and I did a tremendous amount of things in the sport of amateur wrestling.''
Born in Junction City, Kansas, Lashley, 32, won three national titles (1996-98) wrestling for Missouri Valley College. He later joined the Army, where he won a silver medal in the world games.
Before joining the WWE, Lashley trained at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose. Currently, the 6-4, 275-pounder trains locally at American Top Team.
Powerhouse Lashley will battle against Joshua Franklin, a 30-year-old fighter also making his pro debut Saturday in Miami. Franklin has a background in boxing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
''I hate to jinx myself, but I think in MMA I am going to really, really shock some people,'' Lashley said. ``What I've learned in MMA is it's not just the best wrestler, the best striker, the best jiu-jitsu guy. It's almost the best athlete, and, as far as shear athletic ability, I think there's not going to be too many heavyweights who can even come close to my athletic ability.''
Brock Lesnar, another former WWE star, recently scored a big victory in just his third match in the octagon, winning the UFC heavyweight title over UFC standout Randy Couture.
Lashley said, ``My first test is Dec. 13 in Miami, fighting for the Mixed Fighting Alliance. After I get that first test, we're going to see how far I can go, but I believe there's going to be some great things.''
Also on the card, former UFC champ Ricco Suave Rodriguez fights Jeff The Snowman Monson. Special appearances by Thiago Alves and Mike Brown and more
