From 2006, that is.
Phil Pfister was at the Mannington District Fair today to head a Local Strongman competition. It was unique seeing some local people nearly throw out their backs because they took stuff too lightly while people with experience took the trophies.
Pfister was a really nice guy, approachable and polite with everyone. He gave free autographs and pictures to everyone and even walked into the stands at one point to watch part of the competition with the crowd. "Nice to be on this side for once!"
Pfister did some show-off routines. Extremely impressing stuff. Plus, he brought a training piece of his, a 325lb Apollon's Wheel, and did five reps of it for the crowd. Phil explained that the Wheel made its debut in 2002 for an Arnold's Strongman contest and the majority of the competitors couldn't even manage a lift. Only two people did.
Only one did more than once (managing three reps) and the man went on to win the contest. That was some guy named Mark Henry...Phil said that Mark was a smart guy for getting his win and moving on to other things.
The other part of the day was a local high-school football player who, at the age of 15, came in 4th in the Heavyweight division, including carrying a 411lb stone 150ft. Even impressed Pfister with his young power. Phil told the kid that he could easily have a future in the business if he'd want to pursue it and it wasn't in a pandering kind of way.
Including taking a All and all, a fun thing. Nice to meet one of the legit strongest people alive. He says that he has retired, but he's considering "relapsing" later this year for another competition.
