is clearly Mercutio. He spends the whole time he's around trying people's patience. Just overall an obnoxious character really. His death, while a tragedy, was overshadowed by his obnoxious last line "Ask for me tomorrow, and you shall find me a grave man," which is basically either assuming people are gonna be looking for him tomorrow or that he's intending on coming back again and again. If only he could have just been banished from Verona instead of Romeo but he'd probably just find out some way to sneak back in and get thrown out all over again.
It is interesting to note that his name comes from the word "mercurial" which came from the Roman messenger Mercury. I never knew that and it does add another dimension to the character that is nice to ponder.
Thoughts on the play?

The guy that played Mercutio in ROMEO + JULIET played Micheal on LOST and he was the most annoying character on that show, what with the "WALT!" and such

I always thought Mercutio was awesome.
And he had a sweet name.

I think what you mean to say is that Mercutio was the best character in the whole play.
Tybalt was the worst character. Going around challenging people to duels and be played by Michael York...he was asking to get stabbed, if ya axe me.

I always thought Mercutio was awesome. And he had a sweet name. Same. And I played the role in every production my high school put on.

He was something like the comic relief on the romantic comedies of the ancient times.

Mercutio was the emo whiner of that story and I think he secretly had a crush on Romeo.
I played Tybalt in my high school's adaption of the play. Mercutio killed me, the bastard.

He was something like the comic relief on the romantic comedies of the ancient times. Mercutio's death was the trigger turning the story SRS. Up until that point Romeo and Juliet was just a comedy about two kids falling in and out of love. After his death, it was sort of like the first PSA for parents to allow their children some freedom

How about Romeo? Mopes, mopes, falls for a girl, crows, kills a dude, mopes, gets some, mopes, dies... mopes. Not to mention that in the original play he was in his late 30s while Juliet was 13 to 15. He is the world's first crybaby pedophile murderer.

Mercutio is my favorite. I played him in highschool and it was awesome. My least favorite is Romeo because he spends the whole play moping.

I dig the play, but it has inspired centeuries of teens taking their high school (Jr high even) relationships WAY to seriously. My friend would always complain that I didn't know what love is, and I was like you're probably right, I'm f'ing 15.

He killed his character and he is emo. Nuff said but... Tybalt kills Mercutio. What sort of weird alternate Shakespeare is this?

Mercutio? I mean, between him and the Nurse, they make the play. That's like saying "You know who I hate? Falstaff and Puck." I mean granted, I don't know what they were thinking in Romeo + Juliet, at all, because that movie sucked, a lot. I mean, screwdrivered pun, Leo, Clair "Stupid" Danes, Scream Your Lines, Forced puns, story elements that don't work. That film had to make Kenneth Branagh cry, then swear revenge. We have a modern version of Romeo, it's called West Side Story. It's a much better film. Wait, where was I?

I'm not exaggerating when I say I've read this play no less than 40 times. One possible angle to approach this from is that Romeo and Juliet is one of the most farcical plays he ever wrote. The only "sane" character could be Mercutio, who is the conduit for the author's mockery of love. Even the title suggests mockery, because it's pretty clear cut with many scenes that it's not extreme emo as much as it is extreme ridiculousness. There is a reason why both sets of characters who are young and old all overreact or mis-react. They're all senile or too young and stupid to know it.
Romeo fits the thread title description for me. (Well, Tybalt, but Tybalt pretty much tries to do what I wanted to do most of the play anyway.)
