Star Pulse is reporting that 15 year old sensation Dakota Fanning (Charlotte's Web, War of the Worlds) is in talks to star in a sequel to The Wizard of Oz. Producer Basil Iwanyk says, "It will be set in the present day and feature Dorothy's granddaughter."
The 1939 original - based on the 1900 children's book 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' - was nominated for six Academy Awards, won two (for Best Original Song and Score) and has become one of the most beloved films in the history of cinema.
The Tinseltown classic has since been adapted by Sidney Lumet in his lackluster 1978 film The Wiz (which starred Michael Jackson and Diana Ross) and as a sequel in 1985's Return to Oz.
Though details are scarce, Co-producer Todd McFarlane adds, "You've still got Dorothy trapped in an odd place, but she's much closer to the Ripley character from Alien than a helpless singing girl."

If this is TWISTED WORLD OF OZ, I doubt it's going to be a sequel to the classic...more like a re-imagining in a MUCH darker vein.

1939's Wizard Of Oz is my favorite movie of all time. None of the semi-sequels have come close to capturing that magic. On the other hand, I think Dakota is an exceptional actress... Hmmm.

If it's anything like Return to Oz, then I'm all for it.

I don't mean to come across as a pessimist here, but, wow...nothing is sacred anymore. I fully expect new takes on Gone With The Wind and Casablanca to be announced by year's end. We already got the definitive movie version 70 years ago. Just leave it alone.

I mean...the Wizard of Oz with Dorothy in a dominatrix outfit? Seriously? We already got the definitive movie version 70 years ago. Just leave it alone. It's going to be a sequel, not a remake.

We'll just have to wait and see what happens. From the looks of it, we still have awhile to go before any final plans are made.

Yeah, I mean... has anyone seen the toyline this was based on? I doubt Dakota Fanning is going to be in bondage while munchkins torture her with a branding iron.

I'm not so much condemning it as much as I'm just asking "why?" Sad but true. Just with the idea on the table, I'm going to predict that the film will make tons of money based on name value, but word of mouth will kill it.

I don't know....this is the same Dakota Fanning who couldn't shut up about her first sex scene being a rape scene back when she was like ten or eleven. Methinks she is an adventurous actress.

I'm not so much condemning it as much as I'm just asking "why?" That, and it was a book series, and the 1939 adaptation isn't all that close to the source material. Does anyone actually read anymore?

Todd McFarlane is producing this??? Oh my. And to those offended at the idea of a sequel, L. Frank Baum himself wrote a sequel way back when. And the books were darker than most movies based on them, so in the eyes of most movie going folks anything close to the books (like RETURN TO OZ) will automatically be a dark and twisted take.

I'll stick with the comics when it comes to sequels.
Plus they don't have Dakota Fanning
