So here is the problem: I currently work for Mcdonalds, but at the same time I want to work a second job for more money, especially since the pay is low for such an exhausting job (if you worked closing at a busy fast food place with minimum workers then you'll understand what I mean.) Anyway, I start applying at many places: craft stores, book stores, grocery stores, pharmacies, libraries, video rentals, video game stores, bakeries, electronic stores, clothing stores, 99 cent stores, juice shops, ice cream places, you get the picture. Do I get any responses? No. The same thing happened to a couples friends of mine who also went job searching. It seems like the only places that are hiring or giving any kind of response are, guess what? The fast food joints, bingo. WHAT IS GOING ON!?! I follow up sometimes, but it seems that someone else beats me to that vacant position. Any useful help or tips you can give me crappers?

This is what happens when unemployment is so high. Companies don`t need to waste money sending out replies since they`ll have loads of applicants for any positions they have.
I have an interview tomorrow having been unemployed for 9 months. They`re the only company to reply to me in all that time.

I had two replies out of all the applications I have put in since August last year. One lady had a huge stack of applications on her desk of people she was interviewing. The other company I had an interview with they had a huge amount of people they were interviewing as well.

I wonder as well. I just applied for several jobs and don't see many others around here. It's really not a good time to not have a job.

I've been out of work for over a year. I must have sent my resume to 200 companies, and maybe 10 of them responded. Of those, probably 5 had me come in for an interview. And of those, 0 have hired me since I'm still here trying to get a job.
On the plus side, unepmployment has given me a lot of time to play Guitar Hero. I can almost beat Dragonforce on Expert now.

Be persistant. Call the place a week later to ask if they received your application, and ask if they've made a decision. At the same time, don't become a nuisance, but definitely let them know that you are interested in their position.

^ I'd have to repeat this. Call after a week to see if the position is still open. A lot of times they just have so many applications that they only bother to interview a select few. Calling to inquire about the job puts your name a little fresher in their memory and then they are more likely to call you for an interview.

It's been most difficult for me also in the job hunt, right now I just work on call but I would like something more permanent.

I'm in a small town and it just seems to me like it's "who you know" for almost all of the jobs.

I assume you have references available, but it's always good to apply somewhere a friend or family member works at to give you a good word. I applied to 20 different places this summer and finally got a call 3 weeks ago and I am working at a bookstore now. Nobody other than the bookstore called me back or recognized my resume, so sometimes it's just luck.
A lot of people are leaving jobs too since school is coming up, so that might allow for some positions to open up during fall and winter.
