And no, I'm not talking about double dipping chips. I'm talking about re-releases of CDs or DVDs. Like when you buy an album from an artist early on because you're a fan of them but the album sells well enough to warrant a re-release with bonus tracks! Or you buy a movie with no special features because you just want to watch a movie, but then they re-release it with special features!
In the case of CDs that do this, why try to squeeze more money out of your loyal fans? If the songs weren't good enough to warrant putting on the album the first time, make them a free downloadable or something. Or put them on the next album. If they really wanted the money, I could even live with them putting out an EP with the new songs for cheap, just as long as I don't have to buy the same damn album over again.
DVDs are a bit different. It's usually pretty easy to tell when this is going to happen anymore. I've been pretty hesitant to buying a few movies just because I knew the second I did, a Special Edition would come out. Then again, sometimes it doesn't. I put off buying Kill Bill 2 until a few weeks ago just because I kept hearing that they were going to put both Kill Bills in one set, but they never did. But today kinda ticked me off. The second I saw The Machine Girl on DVD, I snatched it up because it's a Japanese movie and you don't get to see a lot of those in mainstream stores. But I guess it sold well enough to warrant a "Remix" edition. *sigh*

I'm not a big fan of this either. But at least they announce them sometimes (Watchmen).
I never bought the Incredible Hulk DVD because I kept thinking there was gonna be some mega-combo with it and the original Ed Norton cut. There never was.
By the way... why is Star Trek coming out AFTER Transformers 2 on DVD?

It's starting to bug me as well.
Look, when I'm a loyal fan, I'm going to buy the most deluxe-y edition you put out. So do me a favor and put them all out on release day instead of making me buy a more expensive version down the line. For example, the most recent Paul McCartney album (shut up, it kicked ass). Six months after it's release, here comes a 100 dollar collector's edition? What the hell?

I've come to accept them after many years of DVD collecting.
However, I am not a big fan of the complete television sets. Instead of rewarding the fans of the show, who buy each set every year with bonus content, they instead build up some fancy packaging and throw in a bonus disc or 2 of special features only available in the box set.
Granted, after I sell my season sets I usually make enough to cover the price of the new set, but still, the real fans are the ones who suffer in the end.

How about Japanese fans getting all kinds of bonus material? There are tons and tons of Japanese-only release tracks floating out there, sometimes like 2 per album. Not every CD release is like this, but lots are. Back in the days of Napster, it was ok, you could always get the tracks, now, I find them a little harder to track down.
It also made me the sucker because when I bought a CD and burned a copy for my friends, I'd always toss in the Japanese tracks as well, so they'd have a complete album and I wouldn't.

By the way... why is Star Trek coming out AFTER Transformers 2 on DVD? I imagine that it's up to the respective studios when they decide to release them. As for double dips, I hate em. The only one I've bought is the special edition of Lord of the Rings after I already had purchased the originals one by one. And I'll be damned if I'm gonna get the blu ray release. But I see why they do it. I don't have to like it, but I understand it.

I'm rarely willing to double dip, but it does happen occasionally. Did with Clerks X, did with Sin City (tho I learned, and am waiting to buy the fancy version of Watchmen). But I think other then that, any time I've double dipped is when my original copy goes missing/got stolen/forgot who I lent too

Yeah. I held off on buying Reservoir Dogs until the 10th Anniversary DVD came out. I snatched up the Mr. Pink edition and then the 15th year set came out. I heard the features were better, but meh.
I also held off buying the Escape from New York DVD until I got the Special Edition new and relatively cheap off amazon.
I snagged the first edition of Flash Gordon from '97. It's so old, it has no special features outside of scene selection, which you gotta access via remote as there's not even a title menu... the DVD just starts up. I haven't bothered with the rerelease as it's sort of nice having a DVD like that with no title screens or menu.

It annoys me alot with DVDs because I'm pretty much a completist... I have to have every sequel good or bad of some film series. I know I've got at least 3 copies of the original Friday the 13th& 2 nightmare on Elm Street dvds. They're some films that I love so much if they put them out on Blu-ray I'll pick up immediately. The Beyond I will more then likely always buy as long as it improves on the previous release. However, I've completely given up on grabbing new evil dead films because I know new ones get released every couple of years. It's funny you started this thread because I know two movies I am going to douple dip for in the next couple months. Happy Birthday to Me for it's restored cover and soundtrack and the Blu-ray SE of The New York Ripper. I had just bought the corrected region 3 dvd when they announced the new york ripper news too.

Spaced is a good example of this. There were 2 series that each fit on one disc, but it's possible to have, I believe, 8 discs now with slightly different extras.

It doesn't really bother me, unless it's a situation where one day, out of nowhere, i just get a wild hair to buy a certain movie. I've seen it everywhere for the past few years, but hadn't had the urge or money to get it until now. So I go to the store, and it's not there. So I end up traveling out of town to another store, not there. So I travel to another, and another, and another.... after a few days or weeks of traveling and searching, I FINALLY Get ahold of it. I watch it and love it.
Then the next week it's re-released everywhere, with bonus features, a sweet new cover, and for cheaper than I paid for the first one.

I hate this so much. If we're going to get a Terminator/Alien/LOTR kind of box set, then I don't mind. I just wait until the deluxe one comes out before getting it. I haven't bought Kill Bill yet because there is supposed to be a deluxe one coming out....but so far nada.
The worst criminal for this is Lucas. He keeps releasing special sets and I know that down the road he'll stiff us for: the Blu-Ray editions, the 3D editions (since they are all getting the 3D makeover), the complete saga editions, etc etc etc.

I love the company for the care they put into horror titles, but damn do they release a lot of double dips. The evil Dead series releases alone is just....massive.

I don't bother buying the complete sets if I already have all the seasons but this irks me when they throw in bonus stuff and make it cheaper to boot. I always say I don't feel like I should be punished for being a big enough of a fan of a show that I started getting the show when the seasons came out. The people who did that are the ones who are going to actually CARE about the bonus content the companies are putting in the compete series sets. I already know I'm going to get burned on Scrubs and Entourage because I started buying those before complete series sets happened. I learned my lesson though and am waiting on The Office because I just KNOW that show is going to have some neato complete series set.
