One of my favorite Disney films I feel is an oft overlooked gem. Just great casting, smart writing, an all around fun flick. I also like the art style and song style was a bit of a departure from their 'heyday' early nineties stuff. Anyone else dig it?

I like it, but as a big mythology fan, it bugs me sometimes.

At the time, I was going through my classic civ art and architecture geek phase, and in a couple of spots they mixed black figure and red figure styles, but that was pretty much my only complaint. Solid movie.

I think that was the last Disney movie (of the '90s rebirth of their movie division) I really enjoyed.
Hasn't aged as well - some of the humor falls flat, and the more I've become aware of the mythology of Hercules, the more this movie annoys me - but it's still fun and still looks bloody good.

I've seen bits and pieces of it, but it comes down to this. -Hades isn't the devil. He's just a god who rules over the deep places of the Earth, which includes the Underworld.
-Titans are not mindless giants, they are a noble race of ancient gods. Hades (whom the Greeks tried not to talk about, much like Hestia) ruled over Tartarus, where the men were kept, but he with his brothers fought against them for ten long years nearly killing everyone on the planet. Likewise, gods do not have a permanant physical form. If Zeus wanted to become a giant to fight them, he could. The sad thing about this, is that there were the Gigantes, who were Gaia's powerful daemons who waged war on the gods, whom Hercules did aid in the destruction of. In addition, the Immortality of Hercules should never be discussed in the context of a heroic story. He didn't become immortal until after his death, and part of him remains in the underworld.
Hey, did anyone ever have a fight between Disney Herc action figure, and Sorbo Herc Action figure?

My #2 Disney film, behind the Little Mermaid.
Loved it from the moment I saw it. James Woods gives a quintessential villain performance in this one, and I wholeheartedly believe this song is one of the best and most overlooked Disney songs ever:

One of the better of the "new" Disney classics. Reminds of the actual DIsney classics, which are always good watching.

I think the gospel type soundtrack was a little over the top in parts, but still a solid movie. For some reason, they didn't have the myth about Herc's origins right...wonder why.

I prefer the actual Disney classics. The only film that stands out to me from Disney's 90s run was Lion King (largely because of the serious tone and well-integrated musical stuff). Hercules would have been better if they took less liberties with the mythos.

To those who say, correctly, that it doesnt match up with the mythos consider this. When Disney was starting work on the Jungle Book Walt came into the writers room and plopped a copy of the book on the table and said "The first thing I want you to do is NOT read this" I never minded it didnt follow the mythos it was a fun ride and one helluva enjoyable movie. Plus it had James Woods! JAMES WOODS!

Hey, did anyone ever have a fight between Disney Herc action figure, and Sorbo Herc Action figure? How about the fact that Hera is his birth mother and doesn't want to destroy him? When I first saw it at 10, I was really into the Greek myths, even reading the word for word translation of the Iliad, but as I've grown older and read more books on them, I just accept it as a reinterpretation. Akin to the King Arthur, where his story has had dramatic changes from where it's started to where it is now. I think Sorbo action figure would win since Kevin Sorbo himself is more powerful than Hercules. For the movie, I thought it was okay when I first saw it. The songs were fine but not really memorable.

Hera is his birth mother? That pretty much invalidates the whole story. HERAcles=Hera's fame (he "made her famous" by overcoming her 12 labors).

HERA IS HIS BIRTH MOTHER??? Who in the name of Chaos, Nyx, Gaia, Eros, Uranus and Tartarus thought that would be a good idea? This isn't some minor point, or condensing characters, or leaving out something, this would be akin to making George Washington fight for the British. One of the major motiffs of Mythology is that Hera torments all the lovers of Zeus and their children.

This would have made her the villain tho and clearly Disney wanted Hades to be the villain of this picture. And I for one think it was the better choice.

Thing is, given how Hades is written, only James Woods can play him (which is why they got him for the TV show) I've always liked how Disney sticks with voice actors for so long, and are able to get them to come back relatively easily. I mean, Kathryn Beaumont (Alice in Wonderland) STILL does the voice of Alice 50 years later. The only notable exception was their falling out with Robin Williams over the ALADDIN sequel and TV show - but eventually they apologized (which he said he was shocked by) and got him back for its finale (sadly, ditching Dan Castellaneta in the process).

They don't really depict Hades as the devil, they depict him as a god who hates his job and wants Zeus's. That said, yeah, they're really, really loose on mythology. The way I see it, they just use the characters and the setting to tell a story they want to tell, and any resemblance to the real story is merely coincidental.

I'm a big mythology buff, and the liberties they've taken with the Hercules story never bothered me once. Personally, I prefer quality to accuracy, and what quality Disney's Hercules delivered. Definitely one of my all time favorite Disney films. Wish they made more like this.
