I got the idea of this thread from reading the Lufisto appreciation thread. She came onto the board, and talked about not giving a promo video to the WWE to possibly get some tryouts or to get signed. As was personally surprised by that, because if she's as talented as she's made out to be (I've never seen her wrestle before), then she would definitely have a chance to make it in the WWE, especially if put into a hardcore environment. They would have a woman willing to do somethings that some of the other women wouldn't do. Then she brought up a good point about that that's not what they want anymore. And like, it was true.
I guess what I'm probably saying is common knowledge now. One of the reason I completely hate the diva search is it takes away jobs from actual wrestlers. After the diva search finished, during the firings of 2004, Jazz, Gail Kim and Nidia were all released. Jacqueline was released earlier in the year, and Ivory was no longer wrestling, and eventually released. That left Raw with a whole lot nothing. All they had were Trish, Victoria, Molly Holly and Lita. Lita and Trish eventually main evented Raw in a tremendous match, but Lita eventually injured, Molly quit for personal reasons, and Trish became injured. Then, the winner of the diva search Christy Hemme, actually became a great wrestler and was very enthusistic with learning. They had her pose in Playboy, and then eventually released her.
That bothered me personally, because she was used so blatently. She would have done anything for the WWE. Even though the Diva Search was an awful idea, she was a light that came out of it. Here you had a woman who was passionate about wrestling, and eager to learn more and more. And then they dumped her.
It's sad, because only a few years earlier, the Woman's division was in a new golden era. The division in the 90s was a complete joke. In the mid 90s, they had Alundra Blaze beat woman jobbers, and only lost to Bull Nakado and Bertha Faye. Then, the title was brought back, but only to be contested against people who couldn't wrestle. Tori couldn't wrestle a lick, and always was a botch machine (Raven talked in a shoot promo that Al Snow said she had a perfect record, because everything she did, she screwed up, sadly it was a negative perfect record), Debra was not a wrestler, Sable could barely wrestle, Stephanie McMahon good lord. They had some bright lights during that time, including Lita, Ivory and Jacqueline, but nothing too much.
When the belt was brought back again at the Survivor Series, there seemed to be a new light. Popular diva Trish Stratus was honing her craft and becoming more talented. The division then picked up big time with the heel turn of Molly Holly, the return of Jazz after the Survivor Series, the introduction of Victoria, Ivory and Jacqueline still in the picture. In 2003, Gail Kim was brought in, and in 2004, Nidia was brought over from Smackdown and helped the division out even more. They had a strong champion in Molly Holly for the majority of this time, and they had lots of great wrestlers. It seemed that woman were no longer being viewed as objects, but as wrestlers.
I love woman and I love T&A, but I said this to a friend of mine (who is actually female and a fan of wrestling). If I wanted to watch T&A type matches on Tv, I'd just watch porn. When I watch wrestling, I want to watch wrestling. And normally, the divas matches are the worst ones. I understand the idea of Sports Entertainment here, hell, I'm one of the biggest defenders on the board here. I'm saying there still can be Sports Entertainment, but it has to be put in matches with actual wrestlers, or wrestlers who are willing to learn. Candace Michelle will be gone once she gets a little more famous. Maria is good in her role as a backstage announcer, but she doesn't belong in the ring.
Haha, I must put this in a little aside here in my rant. I saw a thread about Maria wrestling and people talking about how she's improving and everything. And you know what it reminded me of. That South Park episode when Bebe started growing breasts. When they noticed she had breasts, everyone started complimenting her, and making a big deal out of really dumb things. And at times they would act like monkies around her. That's kinda what I thought that was, because of all the Maria love here, lol. She's should be like Terri though, where she's mostly a backstage announcer, and maybe a manager, but not a wrestler.
The WWE CAN bank on feuds in women's wrestling. Look at Mickie vs Trish. Two talented ladies in a very interesting angle. It's one of the best on Raw. They can have a strong woman's division. But, with this dumb Diva Search, it will never be about wrestling. It will never be able girls living their dreams and being told you can't do it. That's one reason I wasn't a fan of the Mysterio hate. Just because he's small, doesn't mean he can't make a good Champion. And just because your a woman who doesn't look like a playboy, it doesn't mean you can't make a huge and memorable impact. It doesn't mean you can't live your dreams.
The WWE is the largest wrestling platform in the world. That is fact. Whether they have better wrestlers, angles, production, anything can be debated til the cows come home. But the fact is the WWE is the largest wrestling platform in the world and it's the best way to get exposure. And it sucks that some woman will not be able to get the chance to shine on this large stage. It's just not right.
