Having just beaten Batman: Arkham Asylum, I think it's safe to say that it's easily one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, comic book-based video games of all time. I truly felt like Batman while playing it, and the atmosphere alone makes me want to play it again all over. And it also got me thinking about the bad reputation that comic book superhero games have, which caused a lot of people to be hesitant to look forward to the Arkham game. Games like this prove that making faithful, engaging, and fun-to-play superhero games is possible.
Are there any other video games based on comic book heroes that also were really good and that you feel should be brought up when discussing other exceptions to the "those games are generally bad" rule? Preferebly ones based straight off of the comic books (as opposed to the many that come from movies, etc.)? Personally, I still feel that the Neversoft Spider Man game for the PS1 and N64 is still a great game that was faithful to the source material and made it fun to be the Web Slinger.

Spider-Man 2. (The Movie)
It had the free-roaming hero schtick down to a tee.
Unfortunately, they fell prey to ignoring "Don't fix what ain't broken" and ruined that with the rest of the games in the series.

The Punisher game for the X-Box was EXCEPTIONAL in my opinion, it really seemed to be made for fans of the comic and not of the movie it was released around. It had an authentic punisher feel to it and was full of nerdcore cameos.

Yeah, the 3-D spiderman games always were cool, largely because Spider-Man is in a position to take full advantage of such things. I hear the X-Men Classics games were good, and the Hulk game was pretty decent.
But, it's a sound assumption; 1. Licensed games usually suck. 2. Superman 64 could have burried all video games for all time, so that it destroyed it's genre, doesn't surprise me. 3. Most superhero games are released along side a cartoon or movie, which has never been a good thing.

can we count Marvel Vs Capcom 2? I know it's a fighting game but still it has all of the most well known Marvel heroes and villains.

the two monitor konami side scrolling beat'em up X-MEN game. That game made me a fan of Dazzler and the series.

ANY TMNT Konami beat em up. so basically all the arcade games, TMNT II: The Arcade Game for the NES due to it's two bonus levels, TMNT III The Manhatten Project, and TMNT Hyperstone Heist.

2. Superman 64 could have burried all video games for all time, so that it destroyed it's genre, doesn't surprise me. Or that there is the Superman video game curse. I can't think of a decent Superman-solo video game. Back on topic, I would have to go with the Sunsoft Batman for the NES and Genesis, having played through the latter many times, and on hard mode. I also enjoyed Konami's Batman Returns for the Nintendo consoles, and the Sega versions are decent.

We need a thread discussing why no developer has been able to get superman right.

I'll admit I spent hours playing the Superman Atari 2600 game as a kid and sort of miss it when I saw a video of it on Youtube. Atari 2600 Spiderman was also fun. AVGN's review of it is really one reason I dislike the guy's stuff (knocking on the graphics, not taking into account that home consols weren't what they are now. Although I did comment on the Youtube video that I was able to beat it, something he claimed was impossible so ) Spiderman for PS1 Marvel/Camcom 1 All fun

I feel the same way. Aside from the minor thing that seems to bug me A LOT with the webslinging from empty space (thank you Spiderman 2), the music in this game was KILLER.

My list in no particular order:
- X-Men Legends II - Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (XBOX 360) - X-Men (arcade) - Spider-Man 2 - Hulk: Ultimate Destruction - The Punisher (XBOX) - X-Men Origins: Wolverine (XBOX 360/PS3) - X-Men: Clone Wars - Ultimate Spider-Man - Batman: Arkham Asylum
Wow, Marvel is lightyears ahead of DC when it comes to having good games.

It is the same with the movies. MARVEL may have more good games and films, but the good ones DC has are REALLY good, if not the best. And interestingly enough, Batman leads the charge in both mediums for DC. Dark Knight is arguably the best comic book film and Arkham Asylum is arguably the best comic book game.

I`m a big fan of Hulk: UD. Haven`t yet managed to play Prototype but it`s on my 'to buy' list.
Dunno if it counts, but inFamous is really good too. Not based on an established comic book of course, but a very good super hero game none the less.
